Caribbean Cement Company Limited background

Background on Caribbean Cement Company Limited Caribbean Cement Company Limited
(Carib Cement) opened its doors in Jamaica in 1952. Since then, the company has seen several
changes in ownership over the years with its first owners being the Jamaican Government.
Today, Carib Cement is owned by Trinidad Cement Limited Group (TCL). TCL is not just the
majority shareholder in Carib Cement but is also the owner of seven other cement companies in
Trinidad, Barbados, Anguilla, and Guyana. Caribbean Cement Company was conceptualized in
1921. However, serious consideration was only given to the idea in the years just prior to the end
of World War II. There was much argument and debate prior to the opening of the company for
commercial production in 1952.

Organizational activities done at Caribbean Cement Company Limited

Nestled in the foothills of the world-famous Blue Mountains, Rock Fort Kingston, Carib Cement
benefits from access to indigenous raw materials (mineral deposits) and a natural harbor that it
utilizes for import of coal and export of cement and other minerals. Carib Cement manufactures,
distributes, and exports high-quality Portland cement using one hundred percent Jamaican raw
material. The raw material used in the manufacturing process are all mined within ten miles of
the plant. The company exports its boasts of its own ports for the shipment abroad of both its
cement and gypsum. Cement manufacturing is a complex process that begins with mining and
then grinding raw materials that include limestone and clay, to a fine powder, called raw meal,
which is then heated to a sintering temperature as high as 1450 °C in a cement kiln. In this
process, the chemical bonds of the raw materials are broken down and then they are recombined
into new compounds. The result is called clinker, which are rounded nodules between 1mm and
25mm across. The clinker is ground to a fine powder in a cement mill and mixed with gypsum to
create cement. The powdered cement is then mixed with water and aggregates to form concrete
that is used in construction. Clinker quality depends on raw material composition, which has to
be closely monitored to ensure the quality of the cement. Excess free lime, for example, results
in undesirable effects such as volume expansion, increased setting time or reduced strength.
Several laboratory and online systems can be employed to ensure process control in each step of
the cement manufacturing process, including clinker formation.
