ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I am overwhelmed in all humbleness and gratefulness to acknowledge my depth to all those who

have helped me to put these ideas, well above the level of simplicity and into something

concrete.

I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my teacher who gave me the

opportunity to do this wonderful project, which also helped me in doing a lot of research and I

came to know about so many new things. I am really thankful to them.

Any attempt at any level can't be satisfactorily completed without the support and guidance of

my parents and friends.

I would like to thank my parents who helped me a lot in gathering different information,

collecting data, and guiding me from time to time in making this project. Despite their busy

schedules, they gave me different ideas to make this project unique.

CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
Prime Development Limited was incorporated in January 2001 by Richard and Michael Todd to

undertake construction projects in Jamaica. With over 35 years of experience Richard Todd was

involved in projects in Jamaica, Florida and the Cayman Islands and constructed over 2,000

homes in Kingston and St Andrew during his career as both a developer and contractor.

Developments that he completed include Aylsham, Orange Grove, Waterworks, Landscreek,

Norbury Mews, Country Club, Briarwood, Oliver Mews and others.

Prime Development took over the construction works from Telret Construction Limited

(TCL), which was an associate company that was in operation from 1998-2001 and in its own

right completed many developments and projects over its tenure. Prime is founded on Richard

Todd’s construction know-how and past experience in planning, coordinating and executing

construction projects both large and small; coupled with the business acumen of Michael Todd

who has been in construction since 1996. Michael brought to the Company operational foresight

and project management skills. He worked closely with his father on many projects where he

built his on-site construction experience first hand.

Now several years later, the company is operated and managed by Michael and Monique Todd,

whose roles are split between field operation and office management respectively.

Having had years of experience on sites and learning from his father, Michael is well equipped to

successfully manage a project from start to finish. To this end, Project Management has become

4
a key component in the Company’s process, to which Michael has implemented on numerous

projects over the years.

Monique adds years of experience in the financial industry and as such focuses on the financial

management and internal operations of the company. Since joining the company in 2014, she has

implemented financial and operational systems to assist in positioning the company effectively in

the ever changing construction industry.

Today, Prime Development with its current team is positioned effectively for growth. We focus

on all construction aspects in the industry and always endeavor to provide quality construction

whether single family construction or larger commercial projects. During our years of operation,

the Company has undertaken and completed numerous projects across Jamaica where we work

alongside various architects and engineers both domestic and international, local quantity

surveyors and a wide variety of clients.

One aspect that sets Prime Development apart from other construction companies, is our

willingness to discuss all aspects of the job with the professional team, offer alternatives if

requested, and assist in ‘Value Engineering’ exercises on projects to achieve a successful project.

We strive to make the “Construction Experience” a pleasant one for all our clients, and that

makes a differenc

Business Plan
Trafalgar Hands is a start-up organization offering residents of Trafalgar Park a complete

handyman service. By developing its reputation as a qualified, reasonably priced, and trusted

service provider, Trafalgar Hands will quickly generate market penetration and develop a solid

foundation of repeat customers.

Services

Trafalgar Hands will offer a wide range of home repair services. The services are generally fairly

minor tasks, if the problem becomes major a contractor is best suited to solve the difficulty. We

will offer the value-added feature to pre-screen a contractor when we are unable to perform the

repair. This will develop a trust bond with the customer so that when a more minor issue comes

up the customer is more likely to call us due to his honesty displayed earlier. We offer fix-it

services for plumbing, electrical, fences, windows, decks/patios, painting, weatherproofing, and

floors.

Marketing Plan

Hands have identified two distinct market segments, homeowners and property managers. These

are the most attractive customer segments as they are the customers who often have small repairs

that are too small for a contractor but too complicated for the owner to perform themselves.

The handyman industry competes with the contractor industry for home repair jobs. Handymen

are typically used for small items, contractors are typically called in for more extensive projects.

11
Customers will often call whatever service provider they are familiar with, regardless of the

appropriateness. For this reason, word-of-mouth referrals will be very important. Potential

customers will ask neighbors/friends and other property managers for recommendations on

handyman service providers. Hands will capitalize on word-of-mouth marketing by going the

extra mile to keep customers satisfied. Exemplary service will result in new and repeat business.

How The Business Will Operate

Hands have hired electronic repair technicians, to join Trafalgar Hands. We are certified to

perform repairs on the following products.

● Washer/Dryer: General Electric, Kenmore, and Maytag.

● Refrigerators: Frigidaire and General Electric.

● Cooking Ranges: General Electric and Whirlpool

Analysis of a tool on the workshop

Coping saws are used for cutting a range of woods and are very useful for cutting unusual shapes

or curves. In a modern workshop these shapes are normally cut using machine fretsaws.

However, there are times when these machines are not available. Also, using a coping saw is a

test of skill as it can be difficult to control and requires practice.

FITTING THE BLADE

The blade is 150mm in length and at each end there is a pin that holds the blade to the frame. To

fit a new blade the frame has to be flexed (shown below) usually by applying a little pressure.

The blade fits into two slotted pins on the frame of the coping saw and when pressure is released,

the frame springs back to its original shape, holding the blade in position.

13
Care must be taken when fitting the blade so that the teeth point towards the handle. If the blade

is fitted the opposite way the coping saw will be very difficult, if not impossible, to use.

A coping saw can be used to cut shapes in the middle of a piece of material. First, the blade is

removed from the coping saw and then passed through a hole that has been drilled. The blade is

then fitted to the coping saw frame. The saw can then be used in the normal way, cutting the

‘internal’ shape.
