B9 Key Principles
Page 24

The goal : Reduce A-bis consumption

underdimensiong terrestrial transmission resources,
compared to full speed on Air interface on all TRX
Optimisation of A-bis is performed thanks to two features :
Dynamic A-bis & Statistical GCH Multiplexing
Dynamic A-bis
The BSS dynamically allocates A-bis nibbles to a TRX, depending on
the Packet traffic in this TRX
Statistical Multiplexing
All packet traffic of one TRX is transported over a big « pipe » made of
several nibbles
minimum A-bis consumption
Maximum throughput

Novidades BSS, Julho 2006 All rights reserved © 2006, Alcatel

B9 Key Principles (Con’t)
Page 25

No impact on voice quality

No dynamic Abis for voice
Optimise radio throughput while minimising A-bis
consumption
Use all A-bis nibbles
Maximum sharing
In case of A-bis congestion :
Distribute transmission resources between TRX with fairness
Optimise usage of terrestrial resource to minimise radio throughput
degradation

GCH Statistical multiplexing
Page 28

Key concept:
PDCHs are not mapped to Abis nibbles;
PDCHs of a same TRX share a set of nibbles called M-EGCH;
Radio blocks (M)CS-1/9 are concatenated in this link;
Statistical multiplexing in terms of radio conditions;
Different types of nibbles can be involved in an M-EGCH:
Basic nibbles: Every radio TS is always associated a basic nibble;
Extra nibbles: The O&M can define several additional Abis TS. There
are 4 Extra nibbles in 1 Extra TS;
Bonus nibbles: A bonus nibble is a basic nibble whose radio TS is a
signalling TS (BCCH or static SDCCH). Basic nibbles of signalling TS
were wasted up to B8 (except with the Abis 16k statistical
multiplexing);

Dynamic Abis
Page 30

Key concept:
Nibbles can be distributed amongst TRX to create M-EGCHs;
“Basic” nibbles are shared at cell level;
“Extra” and “Bonus” nibbles are not associated to a particular TRX
nor cell. They are shared at BTS level;
Statistical multiplexing in time;
Common pool of Extra nibbles is associated to each

Dynamic Abis
Page 31

Example: M-EGCH of TRX 1 has too

M-EGCH many nibbles, or more than
TRX1 really needed (due to previous
needs);
M-EGCH of TRX 2 needs extra
room;

M-EGCH
are going to regulate needs!

Page 32

Example: Key features:

M-EGCH “Extra” and “Bonus” nibbles can be
TRX1 re-distributed amongst TRX to
create M-EGCHs;
The size of an M-EGCH can be
dynamically increased or
decreased;
Benefits:
M-EGCH Less Abis consumption;
