Pull Out Test Methodology
Important notes: concrete cured for 28 days for an ideal result
1. Rebar pull out test
a. Attach the cylinder to the installed rebar. Tripod might be mounted.

b. Put the wedge head on top of the cylinder.

c. Put the wedges into the wedge head.

d. Pinch the rebar by fastening the wedge inside the wedge head using a
hammer.

e. Connect the hydraulic hose from the pump to the cylinder.

f. Turn the valve clockwise to locks the mechanism, hence the tool is ready to
use.

2. Anchor pull out test
a. Attach the connector to the installed anchor. Tripod might be mounted.

b. Install the anchor extension.

c. Put the cylinder to the installed anchor.

d. Put the steel plate and/or washer on top of the cylinder.

e. Install the nut to the extended anchor. The function of the nut is to receive the
load from the cylinder.

f. Connect the hydraulic hose from the pump to the cylinder.

g. Turn the valve to locks the mechanism, hence the tool is ready to use.

3. Gauge interpretation

Each Enerpac reading gauge has 3 dials, A, B, and C.

A is RCH 202 dial. Each strip line on the manometer indicates a magnitude 0.5 ton.
B is RCH 302 dial. Each strip line on the manometer indicates a magnitude 0.5 ton.
C is RCH 603 dial. Each strip line on the manometer indicates a magnitude of 1 ton.

4. Explanation
a. The first thing to know is the number of tensile strengths for testing. This value
should be the design value of the responsible engineer. If the design value is
unknown, Hilti TDS can be used as a reference.
Example: Pull out testing for chemical anchor HIT RE 500 V3 + HAS-U M12.
Due to unknown tensile value from the responsible engineer, hence Hilti TDS
is used to determine the Recommended Load Tensile (Nrec). The Nrec value
is 17.0 kN.
b. When the tool is pumped, the needle on the gauge will automatically move up
and show the amount of pressure working on the tool.
c. If the needle shows the number in accordance with the desired load in the
tested anchor, the anchor is considered as OK or fit for use. But if the needle
does not reach the desired value, it is considered a failure.
Example: Pull out testing for chemical anchor HIT RE 500 V3 + HAS-U M12.
Due to unknown tensile value from the responsible engineer, hence Hilti TDS
is used to determine the Recommended Load Tensile (Nrec). The Nrec value
is 17.0 kN.
i. The test is considered a fit to use if the needle on the manometer
shows 1.7 tons or an agreed number.
ii. The test is considered a failure if the needle on the manometer does
not reach the number 1.7 tons. Shown by the needle is no longer move
up when the tool is pumped.
d. Then let stand for 5 minutes whether there is a move down on the needle or
not. If the noodle is moved down of 0.5 ton / 1 minute, then the installation
needs to be checked whether there is a failure in the anchor system.

5. Failure
Failure of the pullout test of the anchor may happen with the following case:
a. Improper application
i. Non-conforming drill hole, shown by the hole is smaller or larger than
the approved hole as per TDS
ii. Improper cleaning, a lot of dust or dirt left inside drill holes
iii. Unfit product, the use of chemical that does not suit existing field
conditions (e.g. HIT-HY is used for concrete submerged in water),
iv. Chemical is not mixed properly, misconduct of the installation
procedure by the installer.

v. The distance between anchors is too close, causing concrete splitting
(the occurrence of hair cracks in the concrete because the anchor
distance is too close), this needs to be considered by engineers.
vi. The distance between the edge of the concrete and the anchor is too
close, causing concrete edge breakout (the occurrence of cracks in the
area of the concrete edge) this needs to be considered by engineers.
b. Concrete failure
This failure is due to concrete that has reached its ultimate value. This failure
is shown by cracks on the concrete surface. The causes:
i. Low quality of concrete
ii. Porous concrete
c. Anchor failure
Failure is caused by a broken anchor, mainly because of the steel strength of
the anchor. This failure is achieved if the installation application is correct and
the concrete quality is high, and the testing is conducted to the ultimate
strength of steel capacity.
