Ausebel's meaningful verbal

learning/ subsumption theory

In this module challenge yourself to attain the following learning

outcomes.

• Explain condition of learning

• Explain Ausubel's Subsumption Theory

• Determine the uses of graphic organizers.

• Use advance graphic organizers for a topic presentation.

Many educational psychology theories often criticize the expository or
presentational manner of teaching. They say that teachers assume such a major role in
learning as provider of information, while students remain as passive reciever of
information.

David Ausubel's instead of criticizing this manner of teaching, proposed ways of

improving it. He suggested the use of advance organizers. His ideas are contained in his
theory of meaningful Verbal Learning.
1.The figure above is in advance organizers.

2. Study it. Read the words found in each box.

3. Examine how the line connect the boxes.

4. Describe the advance organizers, specifically on how the words are related to each
other.

 The advance organizer used in the figure above is a graphic organizer. Hierarchy map
type of graphic organizer. The words are completely organize because it shows on the
figure above how they are related to each other and each topic leads to another new
information and there still have connection to the previous topic just like in the first line
that connects to the first boxes. And for the second and third line that connects to the
second and third boxes, the words related to each other because it shows on the figure
above what is asked in the box and it clearly shows there the answer in the following
boxes.

1. Why was the advance organizer presented before the discussion of the topic?.

It presented before the discussion of the topic because, You will find it easier to
connect new information with what you already know about the topic, and you can readily see
how the concepts in a certain topic are related to each other.

2. How can the advance organizer help the students?.

Advance organizers help the students in understanding the new information about the topic.
Also it helps to link the new learning to the existing scheme. As such, advance organizers
facilitate learning by helping to organize and strengthen the cognitive structure

1. Read on the interrelatedness of Ausubel's Subsumption Theory with Gestalt

Psychology and Burners Theory, Explain how their concepts and principles
complement each other.

 The main theme of Ausubel’s theory is that knowledge is hierarchically

organized; that new information is meaningful to the extent that it can be related
(attached, anchored) to what is already known. It is about how individuals learn
large amounts of meaningful material from verbal/ textual presentations in a
school setting. This theory focuses on how a learners learn better. Thus, through the
use of a graphic organizer, a visual means one’s can be able to processed any
information or ideas in an easy manner. Moreover, Gestalt Theory of Learning
where its perspective focuses on the belief that human consciousness cannot be
broken down into its elements which is differ from subsumption theory. This theory is a
cognitive phenomenon where the learner need to use higher problem-solving skill. And
for Bruner’s Learning Theory, where he proposes that learners construct their own
knowledge and do this by organizing and categorizing information using a coding
system. Bruner believed that the most effective way to develop a coding system is to
discover it rather than being told by the teacher. It tells that it is important to the
students to construct their own knowledge for themselves. The only role of a teacher is
that they will only design a lessons that can help a student to discover the relationship
between bits of information. They must look at the concepts presented to them and
search for the underlying similarities that link them together into a cohesive whole.
In this way, learners are able to determine specific relationships amongst the
ideas and perceptions presented.

1. Collect different examples of graphic organizers. Indicate how each is used.

(www.technology.com) is a good source.

• Persuasion map - an interactive graphic organizer that helps students

familiarize themselves with the process of persuasive writing. It assists them with
outlining and preparing arguments for their essays, speeches, debates, etc.
• Sequence Chart - a tool that helps visualize the order of steps of a process or a
timeline of events, etc. It can also be used for note-taking, lesson planning, and essay
writing.

• Story map - used to identify the different elements such as characters, character
plots, themes, techniques, etc. in a book students are reading. It’s a useful tool that
teachers can integrate into the lesson to improve students’ comprehension.

• Biography graphic organizer - a tool that assists with understanding a character from
a novel, autobiography or movie or a historical figure more in-depth. It brings
attention to various important factors about a person’s life.

• KWL chart - used for gathering information from student’s prior knowledge or
experience. This 3 column chart captures the before (what the reader already knows),
during (what the reader wants to learn) and after (what the reader learned) stages of
reading.

• Learning map - visually depict the key takeaways – skills, ideas, knowledge – students
should get from a lesson. It usually provides a high-level view of the lesson/ unit/
course that is to be studied and the connection between its different components.
Students can also use learning maps in the classroom for note-taking.

• Analogy graphic organizer - uses analogy to help students identify similarities and
differences between a new topic and a topic that they are already familiar with. •
Vocabulary graphic organizer - used to assess the vocabulary knowledge of students.
You can create graphic organizers including various elements to help students
learn new words, and learn antonyms and synonyms.

• Problem-solving organizer - used to improve the problem-solving skills of the

students. It helps students identify and evaluate solutions to problems.
• Timeline graphic organizer - graphic organizer that shows a sequence of events in
chronological order. It used to show the progress of something (i.e. growth of a
business) or changes.

• Hierarchy chart - visualize the elements of a system, organization or concept from

its highest position to the lowest. Students can use this tool to understand the
superordinate and subordinate categories of a topic and the relationship between
them.

• Cluster diagram - can be used to facilitate a brainstorming session or structure idea

generation and even to help with exploring new topics.

• Cause and effect graphic organizer - shows the causes and effects of an event. The
cause is the reason why something has happened, and effect is the result of what has
happened. Visualization helps clearly understand the different cause and effect
relationships.

• Mind map - a tool that helps capture the free flow of thought and is widely used for
brainstorming around topics. Additionally, it can also be used to organize and group
information about a topic.

1. In your own words, explain Ausubel's Subsumption Theory.

Ausubel’s subsumption theory, focuses on how the individual or a learner absorbs new
information by tying it to existing concepts and ideas that they have already acquired. They
learn more when it connects the ideas and information that needed to their previous
experience. For him, it’s easy to catch up the new information of the topic when it uses a
material from verbal/ textual presentations like advance organizers that serves as a learning
tools.
2. Choose a topic related to your field of specialization, obtain a material such as a
book chapter about this topic and advance organizer about it.

3. Give at least 4 advance graphic organizers and state their uses.

• Expository – describes the new context.

• Narrative – presents the new information in the form of a story to students.

• Skimming – is done by looking over the new material to gain a basic overview.

• Graphic organizer – visuals to set up or outline the new information. This may include
pictographs, descriptive patterns, concept patterns, concept maps
 From the Module on Ausubel’s theory, we realized that advance organizers that
presented before the discussion are really important. Because, it will find easier to
connect new information with what you already know about the topic, and it can
readily see how the concepts in a certain topic are related to each other. We also
realize that this advance organizers help the students in understanding the new
information about the topic. Also it helps to link the new learning to the existing
scheme. As such, advance organizers facilitate learning by helping to organize and
strengthen the cognitive structure. We appreciate the importance of this theory
especially to us as a student. And we learned the four types of advance graphic
organizers and their uses. Also the knowledge of Ausubel’s theory is hierarchically
organized. And through the use of a graphic organizers, a visual means one’s can be
able to processed any information or ideas in an easy manner.
