An analysis of student difficulties in finding the main idea in the reading text
of the 4th semester English students at IKIP Pgri Pontianak
TUJUAN PENELITIAN
This study aims to find out about student’ difficulties in finding the
main idea in the reading text of the 4th semester English students at
IKIP Pgri Pontianak

The difficulty of finding the main idea in a reading text is often a difficulty for students because sometimes the main idea of
the reading is not only at the beginning of the paragraph but can be in the middle and at the end, caused by several things
such as low vocabulary mastery, being bored because they have to study whole.
Based on the title and purpose of this outline, the researcher will analyze what actually the students' difficulties in finding
the main idea in the reading text, apart from low vocabulary mastery and boredom having to read as a whole. This research
was conducted on 4th-semester English students at IKIP PGRI Pontianak.
METHODOLOGY
Research design : Descriptive Qualitative Study
Technique of Sampling : Purposeful sampling
Sample : Class C Afternoon, Semester 4
Technique of Data Collection : Open-ended questionnaire
Technique of Data Analysis : Thematic Analysis
3. Solution
Base on the answer above, the students need more practice of reading. Most of
them still have low interest in reading, especially in joining reading test or
reading activity in reading class, because those activity provide different genre
text which they are not interested in. They also need more reading practice to
improve their vocabulary mastery. Based on the research result, it is showed
that most of English student have limited vocabulary knowledge whereas
vocabulary is the basic knowledge for those who want to learn a new language
