Assignment No. 1
Subject Name: Fluid Mechanics-I Subject Code: CIEN-2102
Total Marks : Due Date: 22-11-2021
All Questions are related to CLO-2

Q No. 1
I. A fluid mass occupies 2 m3. Find the density, specific weight, and specific gravity if the fluid
mass is a) 4 kg b) 8 kg c) 15 kg
II. The specific weight of a fluid is 11 200 N/m3. Find the mass contained in 2 m3
Q No. 2
A manometer connects an oil pipeline and a water pipeline as shown in figure. Find the difference in
pressure between the two pipelines using the readings on the manometer. Use SG oil=0.86 and
SGHg=13.6. Assume the weight of air is negligible.

Q No. 3
A closed, 5-m-tall tank is filled with water to a depth of 4 m. The top portion of the tank is filled with
air which, as indicated by a pressure gage at the top of the tank, is at a pressure of 20 kPa. Find the
pressure that the water exerts on the bottom of the tank.
Q No. 4
A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a hemispherical dome and is connected to an inverted
piping system as shown in Figure. The liquid in the top part of the piping system has a specific gravity
of 0.8, and the remaining parts of the system are filled with water. If the pressure gage reading at A is
60 kPa, Find:
(a) The pressure in pipe B, and
(b)The pressure head, in millimetres of mercury, at the top of the dome (point C).
Q No. 5
For the inclined-tube manometer shown in figure below, the pressure in pipe A is 0.6 psi. The fluid in
both pipes A and B is water, and the gage fluid in the manometer has a specific gravity of 2.6. What is
the pressure in pipe B.

Q No. 6

The flow of water from a reservoir is controlled by a 5-ft-wide L-shaped gate hinged at point A, as
shown in figure. If it is desired that the gate open when the water height is 12 ft, Find the required
weight W.
Q No.7
The 18-ft-long gate shown in figure is a quarter circle and is hinged at H. Find the horizontal force, P,
required to hold the gate in place. Neglect friction at the hinge and the weight of the gate.
