Assignment 2

Q.1) A pipe of 12 cm diameter containing water flowing at 20 kg/s is capped by an orifice

plate (as shown in figure 2) with flange bolts. The water jet exits to the atmosphere, and
jet diameter reaches a constant value of 25 mm as shown in the figure. The pressure in the
pipe at section 1 is 800 kPa (gage). Assume flow to be uniform both at section 1 and in the jet,
and neglect viscous friction at the pipe walls. Calculate the force provided by the flange bolts
to hold the orifice plate fixed.

Q.2) The pressure in a water main is measured using the dual-fluid manometer shown. Evaluate
the gage pressure in the water main.

Q. 3) The manometer shown contains water and kerosene. With both tubes open to the
atmosphere, the free surface elevations differ by Ho=20.0 mm. Determine the elevation
difference when a pressure of 98.0 Pa is applied to the right tube.
Q. 4) The manometer shown contains two liquids. Liquid A has S=0.88 and liquid B has
SG=2.95. Calculate the deflection, h, when the applied pressure is p1-p2=870 Pa.

Q. 5) Consider the two fluid manometer shown, calculate the applied pressure differences.

Q. 6) In an air pipeline, the flow has the following conditions at a specific section 1: 25oC, 1.8
bar, 15 m/s velocity and 50 mm inside diameter of the pipe. At section 2 the conditions are
different which are: 25oC, 1.3 bar and 75 mm inside pipe diameter. Calculate the mass flow rate
of air and the velocity at section 2. At 25oC and 1.8 bar pressure, air has a density of 2.1 kg/m3.
