MECÁNICA DE FLUIDOS.

TALLER N 2 (2019-1)

Procedure and result carry 40% and 60% of the total mark respectively.
You will be penalized for every error in units with -0.2 points.

1. A gage device and a manometer are attached to a gas tank in order to measure the gas pressure.
If the reading on the pressure gage is 80 kPa, determine the distance between the two fluid levels
of the manometer if the fluid is (a) mercury (density=13,600 kg/m3) or (b) water (density= 1000
kg/m3).

2. You are given a closed tank which contains water at a point b with a depth of 2m from the bottom,
then an oil column of 1m is above the water column at a point a. The specific gravity of oil is 0.9.
At normal conditions of water, find the intensity of pressure, the interface of the two liquids and
b) at the bottom of the tank.

3. Two chambers with the same fluid at their base are separated by a piston whose weight is 25 N.
Calculate the gage pressures in chambers A and B.

4. A U tube has been connected to a fluid container. You are asked to find the gage pressure at A
and the height of mercury column that would create the same pressure. The specific gravities and
fluid columns heights are given
.
5. The pressure of water flowing through a pipe is measured by an arrangement that involves both
a pressure gage and a manometer. For the values given, the pressure in the pipe is to be deter-
mined.

6. An oil pipeline and a 1.3-m3 rigid air tank are connected to each other by a manometer, as shown in Fig. P3–135.
If the tank contains 15 kg of air at 80°C, determine (a) the absolute pressure in the pipeline and (b) the change in
$h when the temperature in the tank drops to 20°C. Assume the pressure in the oil pipeline to remain constant,
and the air volume in the manometer to be negligible relative to the volume of the tank.

8. Determine the total pressure on a circular plate of diameter 1.5 which is placed vertically in water
in such a way that the centre of the plate is 3m below the free surface of water. You are also asked
to find the position of the centre of pressure.

9. A homogeneous, 4-ft-wide, 8-ft-long rectangular gate weighing 800 lb is held in place by a

horizontal flexible cable as shown in Figure below. Water acts against the gate which is hinged at
point A. Friction in the hinge is negligible. Determine the tension in the cable.

10. The inclined face AD of the tank is a plane surface containing a gate ABC, which is hinged along
line BC. The shape of the gate is shown in the plan view. If the tank contains water, determine the
magnitude of the force that the water exerts on the gate.
