CLOSED TRAVERSE MISSING BEARING

I. The technical description of a closed traverse

LINE DISTANCE (m) BEARING
1–2 64.88 ----
2–3 107.72 ----
3–4 44.37 S 35 0 30’ W
4–5 137.84 N 57 015’ W
5–1 12.83 N 1 0 45’ E

LAT = DIST. X COS BEARING DEP = DIST. X SIN BEARING

Solution: After plotting the given lines, distance and bearing, and since lines 1 – 2 and 2 – 3 have no
Bearing, then closed the lines 3 – 4 , 4 – 5 , 5 – 1 and create line 1 – 3 and find its distance
And bearing by making this table below.
LINES BEARING DISTANCE LAT DEP
3–4 S 35 0 30’ W 44.37 -36.12 -25.77
4–5 N 57 015’ W 137.84 +74.57 -115.93
5–1 N 1 0 45’ E 12.83 +12.83 +0.39
1–3 -51.28 +141.31 (reversed sign)

Bearing of 1 – 3 tan bearing = 141.31 / 51.28 = S 700 03’ E

Distance of 1 – 3 = 141.31 / sin 70 0 03’ = 150.33 m. or 51.28 / cos 700 03’ = 150.29 m.
And use the higher 150.33 m. as distance of line 1 – 3

Ꝋ is the angle at point 3 inside triangle 1,2,3 using cosine law: as 64.88 m. opposite of Ꝋ distance of line 1
– 2 with sides 107.72 m. distance of line 2 – 3 and 150.33 m. distance of line 1 – 3
64.882 = 107.722 + 150.332 – 2 (107.72) (150.33) cos Ꝋ then simplify
Ꝋ = 220 11’

Ꞗ is the angle at point 1 inside triangle 1,2,3 using cosine law: as 107.72 m. opposite of Ꞗ distance of line 2
– 3 with sides 64.88 m. distance of line 1 – 2 and 150.33 m. distance of line 1 – 3
107.722 = 64.882 + 150.332 – 2 (64.88) (150.33) cos Ꞗ then simplify
Ꞗ = 38 0 51’

Bearing of line 1 – 2 1800 – 380 51’ – 700 03’ = N 710 06’ E taken from the plotted lines, distance &
bearing

Bearing of line 2 – 3 700 03’ – 220 11’ = S 470 52’ E taken from the plotted lines, distance & bearing
