LEVELING PROBLEM 2

In the two peg test method of a dumpy level, the following observations were taken:

Instrument set up near A Instrument set up near B

Rod reading on A 1.505 m. 0.938 m.
Rod reading on B 2.054 m. 1.449 m.

a) What is the difference in elevation between A and B?

b) If the line of sight is not in adjustment, determine the correct rod reading on A with the
instrument still set up on B.
c) Determine the error in the line of sight.

SOLUTION: a) difference in elevation between A and B:

Point A is higher in elevation than point B, represented by x, the height of instrument from the
. ground of point A is 1.505 m. and the height of rod reading on point B is 2.054 including e, where
. e is the difference in height between the horizontal line and the line of sight which is higher than
. horizontal line.

Point B when the instrument is transferred, the height of it is 1.449 m. from the ground. The height
. of rod reading at A is 0.938 m. including e, where e is the difference in height between the
. horizontal line and the line of sight which is also higher than the horizontal line.

So, the equation goes like this:

1.505 + x = 2.054 – e
Or x + e = 0.549 eq 1)

And x + 0.938 – e = 1.49

Or x – e = 0.511 eq 2)

Adding eq 1) and eq 2) x + e = 0.549

. x – e = 0.511
___________
. 2x = 1.06
. x = 0.53 m. difference in elevation

Rod reading on A with instrument near B:

. x + e = 0.549
Or e = 0.549 – 0.53
Thus e = 0.019 m.

Rod reading on A = 0.938 – 0.019 = 0.919 m.

Error in the line of sight: = 0.019 m.

EXERCISE 2 LEVELING: ( 50 POINTS )

Instrument set up near A Instrument set up near B

Rod reading on A 2.608 m. 1.203 m.
Rod reading on B 3.023 m. 1.882 m.

a) What is the difference in elevation between A and B

b) Determine the correct rod reading on A with the instrument still set up at B, if the line
Of sight is not in adjustment.
c) Determine the error in the line of sight “ e “
