Question 1
(a) The internal and exteranl diameters of a copper pipe (k = 400 W/moC) are 40 mm and 44 mm,
respectively. The tube conveys a hot fluid (80oC, h= 40 W/m2.oC) and is exposed to air (30 oC,
h= 12 W/m2.oC). Determine:
1. The rate of heat transfer from the hot fluid to the air.
2. The temperature of the hot surface of the pipe.

Question 2
A counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger is to heat water from 20 ºC to 80 ºC at a rate of 1.2 kg/s.
The heating is to be accomplished by geothermal water available at 160 ºC at a mass flow rate of 2
kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled and has a diameter of 1.5 cm. If the overall heat transfer coefficient
of the heat exchanger is 640 W/m2.ºC, determine the length of the heat exchanger required to achieve
the desired heating.
Take the specific heats of water and geothermal water to be 4.18 and 4.31 kJ/kg.ºC, respectively.
