State what tenses are the words 'Is' and 'Am' during the engagement activity.

Differentiate use of ‘is’ and 'am' in sentences during elaboration stage.
Create sentences with the words ‘is’ and ‘am’ being used correctly during the
evaluation activity.
Content: The auxiliary verbs ‘ is, am and are’ are used as main verbs in the simple
present tense and as helping verbs in the present continuous tense with nouns and
pronouns. These verbs are the forms of verb to be.“Is, am, are” is a present form of
the verb, in general. “Am” is used with the pronouns “I”. “Is” is used along with
the pronouns like he, she, it, and all singular noun names. “Are” is used along
with the pronoun like you, we, they, and all plural noun names.
Skills: Differentiating between ‘Is’ and ‘Am’ and Completing sentences with ‘Is’ or
‘Am’
Engage: Students will be shown two sentences with the words ‘Is' and ‘Am’ being
used. For Example.‘Johnny is eating his dinner.’ and ‘I am doing my homework..'
They will be asked to read the sentences then they will asked questions such as:
What do you notice about both sentences? Or what is taking place in both sentences?
What are the words that comes before the action word that let you know that the
action is happening?
Which one of the sentences is talking about something that happened before or in the
past?
So what tense would you say the words 'Is' and 'Am' are based on the sentences?
Students will be allowed to share their responses then they will get clarity. Students
will then be shown a PowerPoint which tells when the words 'Is' and 'Am' are usually
used.
Explore: Students will be given some incomplete sentences with blank spaces on
which they will be required to put the correct words 'Is' or 'Am'
Explain: Students will be shown some sentences with is and am being used correctly
and incorrectly. Students will be asked to identify which of the sentences are correct
and which are incorrect, and they will be asked to give reasons for their responses.
And to tell when the is or was should be used in sentences.
Examples of sentences.
Elaborate: Students will be asked to tell the difference between using is and am in
sentences. And give sentences with the words being used. Students will share their
responses then the teacher will clear up any further misconceptions.
