Question 2: The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center requested from

instructional designer to create and design instructional training on text-typology for listening

passages for the DLI faculty. What are the first steps that the designer needs to do before

designing instructional training?

Read the following and select the correct statement.

a. Analysis of the problem.

b. Define the learning objectives.

c. Identify learners’ characteristics

d. Identify and define the business outcomes.

Answer: D is the correct option because identifying and defining the business outcomes

(organization goals) is the first step that the Instructional Designer should consider before

designing any instructional training.

Question 3: Explain the second phase of the Second Discipline “Design the Complete

Experience” that the designers need to take into consideration when designing a training

workshop on the basics of copyright in selecting teaching material for use at DLI. Elaborate on

your answer.

instructional method that matches the performance required, assurance that there is adequate

time for practice, and the relevancy and utility of what the learners are being asked to learn.

Question 4: Network Pronunciation Feedback (NetProf)is a training program for Arabic second

language learners at DLI to practice articulation of word pronunciation to improve learners’

sound production. As an instructional designer, give two suggestions on how to improve the

design of this software and what is the rationale behind this suggestion.

Answer: The designer may suggest the following:

Seggestion1: Improve stimulus for learning to attract the learner’s attention. Because adult

learners tend to be pragmatic and don’t pay attention to training that is not relevant to them.

Therefore, the instructional training must gain, hold, and recapture learners’ attention

periodically by improving the software design to enhance stimulus.

Suggestion 2: Reduce the number of sentences to practice articulating in Arabic, overcome of the

cognitive overload that may happen from excessive information in short period of time so that

the brain will be able to process adequately the incoming information and can transfer it to the

long-term memory.

Suggestion 3: Ensure that the topic/word is presented in a way that is memorable, such as using

visual depictions of the word to help learners establish effective mental images and correlating

them with the audio cues. This will help the learners to recall specific information. In addition,

the learning activity should be designed in a way to ensure learners have adequate time and

encouragement to actively process the learning experience. In addition, this will help to encode

the new information, then, consolidating those new memory traces to connect them with existing

knowledge so that the learners can later retrieve the new information when need it.

Suggestion 4: Ensure the presented information makes sense and is relevant to learners to store

in long-term memory and then recall it later when need it.

Suggestion 5: make sure that learners are able to repeat the interactive activity (rerecording the

articulated sentences) several times by utilizing simulations and role plays in order to retrieve the

information subsequently.

Suggestion 6: Using a variety of contexts to practice retrieving the information to assist learners

with far transfer and adaption.

Question 5: According to the fourth discipline of the six Ds Disciplines, when designing any

learning intervention, the instructional designer should consider the three main factors that drive

learning transfer directly: Ability, Motivation, and Environment. Read the following statements

integral part of any learning and performance improvement initiative is more successful than

others

Answer: D5

1. performance support bridges the gap between mastering the material learned and

applying them effectively.

2. performance support will enhance learners’ recall memory particularly when they don’t

do it frequently.

3. performance support will reduce cognitive load allowing learners to focus on actual

performance.
