Assessment Task 1 Instructions


Provide answers to all of the questions below:

1. Identify one internal information source and one external information source that can
be used to identify sustainability improvements that a company could make. For each
source, explain how this source can be used to develop the sustainability policy.

The Internal source are employees/staff, company policy and procedures, management, shareholders
while the external source like government department, suppliers, customers, competitors, government
agencies are used to identify the sustainability improvements that company used.

Staffs/Employees:
- Consultation with staffs/employees to gather the information regarding the issues within the company.
Staffs have the firsthand information, experiences and expertise regarding the issues they observed or
confronted regards the sustainability. So. The feedback provided through the survey or at the meetings
are valuable resources for the formulation of policy and implementation actions for achieving
sustainability at business.

Competitors:
- Another valuable source of information.
- Most of the business is likely to imitate or copy the same policy and procedures of their rival’s company
operating in the same product line. They will identify their key areas need to be improved and gathers
the required information from competitors in order to achieve sustainability.

2. Outline the purpose and scope of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity
Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Give an example of how a business would have
to modify its business practices to conform to this legislation.

EPBC is the Australia government environmental legislation which aim is to protect the environment
which has national and internationally significance, protect the Australian biodiversity and wetlands,
protect the flora, fauna and endangered species protection and management of important natural and
cultural places. It also aims to provide streamlined environment assessment and approval process as
well as promote ecological sustainable development.

The scope the Act covers the national and internationally significant heritage, endangered species,
flora and fauna, wetlands, important water resources, nuclear action, commonwealth marine areas,
migratory species, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

That business who is operating or about to start its business should comply with the sustainability
policies and procedures. They should make ensure of compliance of ensuring their activities doesn’t
threatened to endangered species, cultural and natural heritages, wetlands and important water
resources, where it is operating.

3. Outline the purpose and scope of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting
Scheme. Give an example of how a business would have to modify its business
practices to conform to these regulations.

The purpose of national Greenhouse and Energy Reporting is to meet the legislative objectives of
providing a single national reporting framework for energy and emission reporting and publishing
information about greenhouse emission and energy consumption. Company that meets the legislative
threshold must register and report about the emissions and amount of energy and resource consume
from the facility. Likewise, company is required to report their past financial year’s emissions and
energy use by 31st October every year. Company is required to de energy audit reporting for reporting
its energy consumption and emissions.

4. Describe how complying with the Australian Packaging Covenant voluntary code of
practice could affect the way a company does business.
The Australian packaging Covenant comes under the framework of the national wise policy and is
a voluntary code of practice for the business. The objective of this covenant is to reduce the
environmental impact of packaging used. The impacts can be minimized by designing packaging
that is more resource efficient and reusable, increasing the recovery and recycling of household
and used packaging and taking actions to reduce the incidence.

A business compliance with this covenant will be success in minimizing the environmental impacts
while packaging and recovery change without changing its quality and design. The key aspects like
maximizing the water and energy efficiency, materials used for packaging, production and
distribution steps for renewal energy, minimizing waste, using recycled and renewable materials,
minimizing the risks of chemicals and hazardous substance and others are likely to impact on the
undertaking of company’s business.

5. Describe how complying with the Australian Ecolabel Program voluntary code of
practice could affect the way a company does business.

Australian Ecolabel Program is the approval or permission given to products which have lesser
impact on the environment those functionally and competitively similar products. The overall
objective of the program is to promote the sustainable and highlights the products to the
consumers. It is a voluntary code of practice which influence on the shape and benchmark for
behavior at the marketplace. It support the program of environment related policies that improve
environmental performance and issues like waste minimization, minimization of resource

comply with environmental labeling specifications and criteria which are objective, reasonable and
verifiable. Specially, the companies working in the field related to architectural and protective
coating, carpet industry, furniture & fittings, plastic recycling industry and rubber manufacturing
industry must comply with his ecolabel program code of practice.

company could use to establish sustainability benchmarks.

- Use of renewable resources like wind, solar energy instead of non-renewable resources like fossil
fuels.

practices.

The alignment of sustainable procurement with core business strategies and instituting a sustainable
procurement policies and roadmap helps in achieving sustainability and growth of business.
Sustainable procurement considers the environmental, social and economic impact throughout the
entire lifecycle of goods & services provided by the business. The different approaches that can lead to
sustainable work practices are outlined as:
- Purchase paper with 100 percent recycled content
- Make purchase of item like furniture & fittings, supplies which can be reused and recycled.
- Avoid purchasing of single use plastic goods.
- While procurement of goods & services, whole life cycle of goods & services should be taken into
consideration. It should consider whether the good & services produced were environmentally friendly,
have use the recycled and reused items and so on, throughout the process.
- Priority should be given to local sourced product.
- Focused more on the environmentally friendly products rather than cheaper products.

Those companies who work closer with suppliers are found to be lessening their environmental,
social and economic impact and have positive growth of business. Major companies focus on
reducing costs of greenhouse gas emissions and impact on air, land, water, biodiversity and
geological reserves by focusing on their supply chains.

o Whether warehousing goods & services based on the sustainable practices and guidelines
while delivering the goods and services to and from warehouse as well as while delivering to
customer.

9. Describe how a business can use sustainability indicators to measure quality


assurance.

The sustainability indicators such as energy & water consumption, air quality, waste management,
equitable society and others measured the impacts of ecological, social and economic dynamics of
business aspects. These indicators show the status of a business over a period of time and
whether they were complying with these indicators while undertaking their activities in the society.
These indicators aim at monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and performance of
sustainable business goals and objectives. Likewise, indicators helps in comparing & evaluating
the business performance and compliance standards and make an assessment of whether
business is implementing sustainable business. A sustainable business has incorporated this triple
line bottom paradigm which includes environmental, social and economical indicators, from which
business makes its own values. The quality of goods and services, carbon dioxide emissions,
waste produced, ecological disbalance, profit sharing, CSR activities are some of the
issues/factors that impact on the business.
