Time is among your most precious assets, and the famous statement of the American
entrepreneur and motivational speaker Jim Rohn, “Either you run the day or the day runs you”,
truly gives me food for thought about the significance of time management in our daily lives. In
modern days, people may often get the sense of constant shortage of time. According to a survey
of RescueTime in 2020, only 5% of people claim they finish their daily tasks “every day” (1).
With endless to-do lists and many important activities in the day-to-day routine, both at work and
at home, you easily feel overwhelmed and lose control of your time. This is when “the day runs
you”, leaving you in the “forever busy” state with stress and no satisfactory acquired results. In
order to escape this troublesome situation, putting things in the right order and starting to “run
the day”, effective time management is the essential solution. It helps you determine your top
priorities based on their importance and urgency level. This will narrow down the tasks, goals,
and people that definitely matter to you and deserve your greater focus. Consequently, with more
work completed correctly and productivity improved, time management will free your mind
from stress while allowing you more leisure time and better opportunities to live life to the
fullest. In summary, if time management is strictly applied in your daily life, a full control of
your time will be totally possible, just like what the well-known American peak performance
coach Michael Altshuler says, “The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot.”
