ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to conduct and

complete my 16 weeks of Industrial Training at KWM Craft Sdn. Bhd. It was one of
the most unforgettable experience I have ever encounter as I had gained valuable
knowledge and skills during my entire in-plant training. I appreciate that the ability to
acquire of these perspective helped to introduce me to various areas of thought and
perception. Moreover, this in-plant training had benefited me on developing and
strengthening my major soft skills such as effective communication skills, time
management, critical thinking, leadership and also some minor soft skills are included.
I believe it is good for me to express my heartiest gratitude to all the wonderful
people who have dedicated and supported me throughout my industrial training in
several aspects.

First and foremost, I would like to give my gratitude to GMi, especially the
Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) and also the Technical Training Officers
(TTOs) for their efforts on guiding the students on their preparation for their Industrial
Training. I also greatly appreciate the support of our Industrial Training Program
Coordinator, Mr. Alies bin Hashim and my supervisor, Mr. Muhammad Syazwan bin
Muhamad Isa, for assisting me throughout my training journey. In addition, I would
like to express my utmost appreciation to KWM Craft which had offered me with an
amazing opportunity to undergo my in-plant training.

In simple terms, during this period, I would like to give special thanks to my
family and my friends for their continuous support and understanding. Because of the
workload and strict timelines, it will be somehow stressful to work in the production
field, but their encouragement helped me to overcome the challenges I confronted
with more strengths, patients, and positive minds.

INTRODUCTION

My name is Nurul Anis Hidayah binti Muhamed Rafaizul. I am currently on my

third year of pursuing my studies at German-Malaysian Institute (GMi) taking Diploma
in Mechanical Engineering, majoring in Product Design & Manufacturing. I was to
conduct my in-plant training on 7th February until 27th May 2022 at KWM Craft which
is located at Dengkil, Selangor. I was placed under Production Department to
implement my industrial in-plant training.

The objectives of conducting in-plant training are to provide students the

chance to check their interest in a very specific career before permanent
commitments are made, to cultivate the resilience, spirit of teamwork and self-
confidence in the lives of students and to build strong communication skills for a
group of staff and trying to learn the right conduct in the industrial field of corporate
life.

My experience as a trainee placed under the Production Department, for 16

weeks has given me a lot of exposures in the process of making product work field.
This training had given me the opportunity to be involved in operating machine and
hands-on work methods respectively. It had encouraged me in many aspects, and
one of the great drawbacks for me was being able to gain valuable experience by
playing an active role in production-related operations. The first-hand experience and
expertise I acquired during my training time is not something I can simply learn out of
lecture classes or textbooks. On a side note, the knowledge and skills I had gained
can be applied throughout my daily life.

In general, this in-plant training is one of the most adventures phase during my
diploma. I can implement myself to engineering world and to professional production
expertise. I now have the ability to apply the industrial and technological knowledge
and skills acquired to GMi to the actual goal. In this report will briefly introducing to
my journey as a trainee at KWM Craft during my industrial training within 16 weeks.

CHAPTER 3

CONTENT OF TRAINING

In this chapter, the topic will brief with details of the task that had been done. Anyhow
this chapter also will brief some of the selected tasks that involving of the method of
the process, findings from the task, solution and achievement from the task and
result from the task. The tasks that will be highlighted are :- Woodworking Finishing
Techniques, Building a Lecture Table, Laser Cutting, CNC Wood Lathe Machine,
and Sense of Malaysia x KWM Craft.

3.1 Woodworking Finishing Techniques

Most types of wood will easily pick up scratches and dirt resulting in leaving marks.
Wood can also shrink or expand in response to the moisture in the air. Finishes,
protecting the wood from all of the above, either with a protective layer over the top
or by penetrating the surface and hardening there. Additionally, most finishes will
accentuate the grain, and when a number of coats are built up, it will make it shine.

Penetrating finishes are oil-based and absorbed by the wood. They are easier to
apply than surface finishes and give the wood a more natural look.

3.1 Lecture Table with Penetrating finishes

Surface finishes dry on top of the wood to create a protective coating. Paint,
polyurethane and shellac are examples of surface finishes. They offer durable
protection and a good choice for exterior furniture.

GERMAN-MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE | 18
Application Methods: Brushed, Sprayed, Wiped
Products that applied by brush, which requires care to get even results and avoid
sagging or drip marks. Brushed finishes tend to go on thicker than wiped or sprayed,
usually requiring fewer coats.

Figure 3.2 Brushed Product Sample

Sprayed-on finishes allow fast, thin coats that can be built up, but good results
require a proper spray gun setup, along with a spray booth of some kind.

Wipe-on oil finishes provide an easy method to get a good result. The finish is
worked into the wood using a soft cloth, sit a little while, then wiped off. These coats
go on thinner than with a brush, requiring more of them, but dry a bit faster.

Wood Finishing Process

When it comes to any type of wood work, finishing is the last process. It helps you
offer the best look to your piece of furniture, hide surface detects, and protect it from
environmental damage.

i. Sanding

Sanding is the best way to remove and finishes like paint, acrylic, varnish,
lacquer and shellac. To remove the existing finish from smaller surfaces,
sandpaper is needed. Sanding will remove not only the finish, but also the
scratches or marks, making the surface smoother and cleaner.

ii. Chemical

Use chemicals for removing varnish, polyurethane, and paint from wooden
furniture or artifacts. Commonly called chemical strippers, you can use them to
remove the finish without damaging the wood. Apply the chemical to the wood
surface using a brush. You may need to leave it on for some time. Use fine steel
wool to remove the finish and then clean the wood surface with a clean wet cloth.

iii. Solvents

Solvents are suitable for removing shellac and lacquer as they are alcohol-based
finishes. Use denatured alcohol for removing shellac from wood, while lacquer
thinner can help to remove lacquer-based finishes.

3.2 Building a Lecture Table

A lecture table is a pulpit in a mosque where the imam stands to deliver sermons. It
is also used in other similar contexts, such as where the speaker sits and lectures the
congregation. The lecture table symbolically the seat of the imam who leads prayer in
the mosque.

In this section, I will briefly explain on 4 types of lecture table/lectern that I have
expertise on building it during my internship. There are sitting lecture table, basic
lecture table, Petronas lecture table and Rostrum. All lecture tables comes from a
raw wood with 6’ x 6’ in size. These lecture tables go through cutting on a table saw,
and being assembled with nail gun and wood glue.

3.3 Laser Cutting & Marking

Laser cutting is a type of thermal separation process. The laser beam hits the surface
of the material and heats it so strongly that it melts or completely vaporizes. Once the
laser beam has completely penetrated the material at one point, the actual cutting
process begins. The laser system follows the selected geometry and separates the
material in the process. Depending on the application, the use of process gases can
positively influence the results.

Laser marking is the practice of using lasers to engrave an object. Laser marking, on
the other hand, is a a broader category of method to leave marks on an object, which
also includes color change due to chemical/molecular alteration, charring, foaming,
melting, and ablation. This technique does not involve the use of inks, nor does it
involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out, giving it an
advantage over alternative engraving or marking technologies where inks or bit
heads have to be replaced regularly.

3.4 CNC Wood Lathe Machine

Operated with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems and provided with
precise design instructions, CNC Lathes are machine tools where the material or part
is clamped and rotated by the main spindle, while the cutting tool that work on the
material, is mounted and moved in various axis. This section will explain step-by-step
on how to set up a CNC lathe machine and building a Cokmar with it.

In general, CNC Lathe machines comes in the following main configurations:

 Horizontal, Vertical
 Slant Bed
 Flat Bed
 Standard
 Multi-axis

Depending on their configuration, CNC Lathes may have the following components.
A CNC lathe machine is normally used to perform / produce precise round shapes
with both an Outer Diameter (OD), and an Inner Diameter (ID). Practically all kinds of
structures could be machined with this machine tool, depending on their needs in
different industries.

Steps on how to set up the CNC Lathe Machine:

1. Turn ON main switch.

2. Turn ON air pressure.
3. Turn ON control panel.
4. Release the Emergency switch.
5. Select F2 (File), reselect F2 (Pendrive File)
6. Select File; Enter = Drawing will appear on the screen.

3.5 Sense of Malaysia x KWM Craft

This project is a collaboration between Sense of Malaysia and KWM Craft for a
showcase in KLIA and KLIA2. I have been involved in this project as a designer. My
roles are to re-design products that need to be present for the showcase. The
products must include the sense of Malaysia. The objectives of this project is to
revealing Malaysia’s identity in wood making through carving motives and to
represent the best of Malaysia in various product that captures the perspective by
KWM Craft.

I have redesign Rehal, Phone and tablet holder, Bookmark, and Wall clock for this
project. The medium that I use for the whole designing process are AutoCAD, CATIA
V5, Adobe Illustrator, and AutoDesk. From this project, I learnt on new designing
medium and improving my designing skills. I have attached all the designs below:-

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY

5.1 Conclusion

To finalize all the contents written from the previous chapters of the report, as a
conclusion, the internship program that involved the company’s industrial training
successfully contributed to the achievement of GMi internship goals as well as my
goals that I planned to achieve during the internship season. I learned a lot of
unexpected and invaluable knowledge, skills and experience during the internship
training sessions that I had never expected before.

While facing the obstacles and challenges when performing the tasks, I had given
these obstacles and challenges that challenged me were successfully increasing my
trust in communication, raising my awareness of the input I have learned from it and
using the output properly, raising my self-awareness maturity level and increasing
both my technical skills and soft skills.

With the ability of knowledge and hands-on experience I have learned from GMi,
there must be a few problems that need to be encountered and find the best result to
solve the problem, contributing to me a better innovative solution and alternative idea
that can give benefits to myself and also to the company.

At the end of the internship program, I had met its goals with great experience and
moment that made me wiser and open-minded about future challenges to meet the
key point for the engineering and technology challenge. I hope students need to give
their best focus and intention to learn during training for the next internship season in
order to develop their trust and curiosity as well as their professionalism.

5.2 Problem Encountered

During my in-plant training, there were several problems and hurdles encountered
that need to be fixed either by myself or with supervisor’s advise. I took that as a
challenge for me that they give the support and chance for me to encounter the
problems. Problems that will be highlighted in the subject are:

A. Repainting a Lecture Table

Problem finding: Each and every lecture table or “Meja Penceramah” is made with
the finest craftsman and skilled efficiency. Every item are according to the mosque’s
needs. Customization request includes customizing the mosques’ name, logos,
preferred colors and etcetera. An order from Masjid is wrongly painted due to
miscommunication. When the lecture table should be painted in Teak color, the
Finishing Department misunderstood and painted it in White.

Consequence: Without following the customer’s needs, might as well dropping the
image for the company. Take note that no matter what our customers order, the
company will ensure that the customer will receive the order of the highest quality
that is made to last.

Solution: To solve this problem, a guided step were taken to re-paint the lecture
table. Here all the equipment included:

i. Sand Paper Grit 380

ii. Hand Sander
iii. Teak Color
iv. Brush & Cloth

From my overview, the lecture table cannot be soaked in thinner as the lecture table
are not covered in Lacquer yet. So, the best way to remove the paint is by sanding
the whole lecture table, giving its original color back. My supervisor also given me the
list of equipment and step for me to prepare so there are zero to none problem
encountered.

GERMAN-MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE | 36
Figure 5.1 Rejected Lecture Table Figure 5.2 New Lecture Table

Action: A whole new lecture table was built rather than sanding the whole table. This
because the action of sanding the lecture table took a lot more of time since all
materials for building a lecture table are already available. The process of completing
a single lecture table only took 4 hours.

After a new lecture table is done, the process from sanding, painting, sealing are
made. This time we carefully check with our supervisor about the color that is going
to be painted for this lecture table as we do not want any mistake happening again.
All is done within a day.

B. Fixing Paint on Cokmar

Problem finding: The Cokmar or the mace is one of the compulsary items that is
used during Friday prayer’s sermon. On it’s day of delivery, suddenly the paint is
peeling after it is being taped for gold painting. This happen when the layer of
Lacquer is too thin making it easily peeled after being taped.

Consequence: Without following the customer’s needs, might as well dropping the
image for the company. Take note that no matter what our customers order, the
company will ensure that the customer will receive the order of the highest quality
that is made to last.

Solution: To solve this problem, a guided step were taken to re-paint the
Cokmar.The equipments used are:

i. Brush
ii. Black paint
iii. Soft cloth

From my overview, the painting process need to use thin tip brush as the motives on
the Cokmar are very complicated that if I did not take a safety precaution while re-
painting it, it might cause a bigger damage on the Cokmar. My supervisor and
colleagues also advised me to make it perfect as the Cokmar need to be delivered on
the same day.

GERMAN-MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE | 38
Figures 5.3 Process on Fixing Paint

Action: The excess of gold painting were removed with thinner as to give a better
finishing texture on the Cokmar. After all the excess of gold painting are being
removed, there were peeled surface on the black painted surface due to its condition
after being taped. The black painted surface were repainted with black paint to get
back the original color.

After all process are done, the Cokmar go through the Clear Lacquer Paint process
to get the best finishing afterwards. Waiting for the clear lacquer paint to dry, it will
instantly being delivered to customer.

5.3 Recommendations

As is well known, industrial training is one of the mandatory requirements for GMi
students to pass for a Diploma certificate. So, it is very desirable if students can
recognize and gather knowledge about the intricacies in the world of work and be
able to use everything they have learned before and its application in the world of
work.

However, here I would like to give some reasonable suggestions to the company.

i. Increase the number of manpower so that existing employees are not burdened
due to shortage of manpower.
ii. Improve product quality and durability to be able to compete against with other
larger companies
iii. Responsible and disciplined attitude in taking care of company equipment and in
accordance with established procedures.

Apart from that, I would also like to give some suggestions that I think may be
appropriate for German-Malaysian Institute students.

Understanding and acting in accordance with the culture of an organization is

important whenever you start working somewhere new. Watch and seek guidance
from your colleagues and peers. Next, be mindful of how you present yourself to your
co-workers and supervisor. And don’t forget the common courtesy which is be
punctual, follow up and follow through.Lastly, be sure to ask your supervisor and co-
workers for feedback on your performance so you can learn what you have done well
and what areas need improvement.
