A. COUNTRY PROFILE
● Country Name - Jordan (Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan)
- Jordan is a kingdom in the Middle East.
- It is a young state that occupies an ancient land, one that bears the traces of many
civilizations.
- Jordan has been an independent kingdom since 1946. It is among the most politically
liberal countries of the Arab world, and, although it shares in the troubles affecting the
region, its rulers have expressed a commitment to maintaining peace and stability.
● Capital - Amman
- The capital and largest city in the country is Amman—named for the Ammonites,
who made the city their capital in the 13th century BCE. Amman was later a great city
of Middle Eastern antiquity, Philadelphia, of the Roman Decapolis, and now serves as
one of the region’s principal commercial and transportation centers as well as one of
the Arab world’s major cultural capitals.
● Flag
- The flag of Jordan features the traditional Pan-Arab colors, which symbolize the unity
of the Arab nations. The colors of the flag aren’t all that has symbolism. The flag
features a chevron design on the hoist side that connects the three horizontal bands.
This chevron pays homage to the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt.
● Currency - Jordanian Dinar
- The Jordanian dinar (JOD) has been the national currency of Jordan since 1950. The
current series of banknotes have denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 dinars. The
Jordanian dinar is considered to be the fourth-highest valued currency in the world.
● Language - Arabic
- Arabic is the official language in Jordan. The entire population, including minority
communities, speak Arabic. It is commonly employed in most written documents and
media.
- You can spot other foreign languages used in the country such as English, French, and
German.
B. TYPES OF TOURISM
Ecotourism:
Jordan’s extensive network of nature reserves offers some of the best ecotourism destinations
in the Middle East. They’ve also made a number of important conservation achievements,
including captive breeding and re-introduction of the Arabian Oryx, Gazelle, and Nubian
Ibex.
Sports:
The most popular team sports in Jordan are football (soccer) and basketball; handball and
volleyball are also widely played. In individual sports, boxing, tae kwon do, and swimming
are the most widespread.
Adventure:
➢ Canyoning
Despite being known primarily as a desert, Jordan actually has a surprising amount of water,
and even a rainy season. This helps fill many of the siqs (canyons) and wadis (valleys) with
gently flowing creeks and rushing rivers.
There are several places where you can ride camels in Jordan, but my early morning trip
through Wadi Rum was among my top trip memories. Perching six feet atop a spindly-legged
dromedary is pretty thrilling, especially when they kneel down to allow you to mount and
dismount.

rock formations in the south, and plenty of castles, wadis (canyons) and ancient ruins
in between. Whether you’re a casual walker or a hardcore hiker, the abundance and
diversity of hiking trails in Jordan offer options for a variety of skill levels and
abilities.
➔ Craft souvenirs with local artisans
- Across Jordan, you can find opportunities to learn from an artisan and take home your
own hand-crafted souvenir made using traditional techniques. Possibilities include
basket weaving in Umm Qais, paper making in Iraq Al Amir, mosaic-making in
Amman and Madaba, and weaving at Bani Hamida near the Dead Sea. If you’re short
on time and won’t have a chance to make a souvenir, you can still buy gifts from
these local artisans and other stores in Jordan
➔ Shopping
➔ Mecca Mall
- The mall is a one-stop location for most of your needs. Be it grocery, clothing, books,
pharmacy, the Mecca mall has it all. This is a place where high-end brands meet
inexpensive shopping.
➔ Why Not Shop
- The place is located in Petra which is famous for its archaeological sites. The shop is
beyond the treasury which sells some amazing traditional handicrafts, jewelry, pottery
bowls, wall hangings, and spices. The shop may not look appealing at one go, but
once you enter, you will realize that it is worth the visit.
