Mental emotional problem description in adolescent


15-17 years old in Bandung City

Background: Physical, mental emotional, social development in an adolescents put them in a


psychosocial vulnerability so that the mental emotional and behavioral problem can be occured. Detection
of emotional and behavioral problems in early stage are expected to help them to get better virtue for their
future.

Objective: To describe the emotional mental problems in adolescents ages 15-17 years old in Bandung
City.

Method: Subjects (n=248) consist of boys and girls, ages 15-17 years old, were selected by multistage
cluster sampling method to fill the Strengths and Di iculties Questionnaire (SDQ) by self-reporting. The
research method is cross-sectional based on questionnaires result that distributed to high school
adolescents in Bandung undertaken since August 2015 to November 2016. The first stage is to divide the
area into six subregion. The second stage were to select a high school that have the male students most
from each subregion. From each school, two classes are taken from grade 10 and from grade 11 by cluster
sampling.
Result: Subjects consisted of 196 boys (79%) and 52 girls (21%). Most respondents (75.4%) are in the
normal category of mental and emotional problems and less than 10% (7.7%) of respondents who
experienced mental and emotional problems. Based on the problem domains that can be assessed in the
SDQ, the largest proportion was behavioral problems (22.2%), while for the emotional problems,
hyperactivity, problems with peer relationships, and social behavior domain is less than 10% (7.3%, 5.6%,
2% and 2.8% respectively). Most respondents were within the normal ranges in every domain, especially
prosocial behavior that has the highest proportion (94.4%).
Conclusion: Mental emotional problems experienced by adolescents aged 15–17 years in Bandung City
generally were behavioral problems (22.2%). Most of the respondents were in the normal category in each
domain, and the highest normal category proportion are within prosocial domain (94.4%)
