HONESTY COFFEE SHOP

A business and "coffee shop," Honesty Coffee Shop is placed near to the Port of Ivana, Batanes. It is
owned by Jose and Elena Gabilo, an Ivatan couple who gained international fame for demonstrating
Ivatan honesty. What distinguishes this store as unique both globally and inside the Philippines? The
shop is vacant of employees. Instead, the owners rely on the honesty of the visitors. Everyone is free to
take what they need, and all that is required is that you record what you took along with the
appropriate quantity in a logbook. Next, you place your payment in the supplied box.

On the shop's wall, the following rules were posted:

 Self-service only
 Get what you need
 Pay for whatever you need
 If you have no change, knock at the next door
 If no one answers, sorry you give more than the price
 Always remember, "honesty is the best policy"

RAKUH A PAYAMAN

The Payaman, also known as Rakuh-a-Payaman (broad pasture), is a communal pastureland and
promontory in the Barangay Imjanjbu of the municipality of Uyugan, which is located in the southern
portion of Batan Island. It is a must-see sight in the Philippine province of Batanes. As you stroll around
Rakuh-a-Payaman, you'll be able to take in the distinctive view of the rolling hills and lush meadows
where horses, water buffalo, and cattle are allowed to graze freely. The Pacific Ocean, the Tayid
Lighthouse, the rough coastline below the hills with strong large waves slamming on the shoreline, and
the volcanic Mount Iraya are all visible to visitors in the breath-taking panoramic view of Batan Island's
mid to north. Visitors can also view the neighboring Diogo Island to the north on a clear day. Aside from
higher private homes like the one in Mayapoy and the top of Mount Iraya, in my opinion, Rakuh-a-
Payaman has the nicest view on Batan Island. Because tourists frequently mistakenly think of Rakuh-a-
scenery Payaman's as the location of the Marlboro cigarette ad, Rakuh-a-Payaman is now referred to as
the "Marlboro Country."

FESTIVALS

Kulay Festival

The "Kulay Festival," which is celebrated during the second week of April and translates to "everything
dried," is an event that celebrates the Ivatan people's straightforward yet vibrant culinary
history. Together with Basco, Batanes' local government and the Philippine Department of Trade and
Industry, they celebrated it. The primary goal of this five-day celebration is to introduce domestic and
international tourists to locally produced and processed food items such dry products like onion, garlic,
rice, corn, and fish among others.

Payuhuan Festival

The word "payuhan," which means cooperation in Ivatan, is used for this five-day celebration in June.
During this occasion, a procession is held throughout the province to remember the evangelizing
journey. The Ivatan Olympics are held in communities and schools as a tribute to the local sport. The
Kanan Nu Kumavahayan, also known as the Unity Lunch, which is a government-funded event open to
all, is another highlight of this fiesta.
