Lesson Plans from Student Teaching Reflection

Incorporating Technology: I selected this lesson plan because I feel like videos, interactive

lessons, and playing Splash Learn games really helps all students in one way or another. Some

students learn a lot from watching a video while others learn best by interacting with the

teacher or the resources on Think Central. Games are also a great way to students to take what

they have learned and apply it. It gives them a fun chance to keep learning. All these uses of

technology help students get engaged, apply the material, and also allow them multiple

chances to use what they have learned. This helps them to develop long term memory. In this

lesson this was the first time that the students had learned this information. I have used these

ideas many times throughout my teaching. These activities seem to work for the students in my

class. I also play Kahoot often and other Splash Learn games. Students seem to really enjoy

when we add technology into their learning.

Reading : I selected this reading lesson plan because I enjoy teaching about POV and also about

what students find interesting about the characters in the story. This third-grade standard is

very important for students to learn because it will be on their state test at the end of the year.

I also enjoy teaching about realistic fiction. When I first started teaching this concept the

students were very confused because often in first person point of view it may have words in it

that could be for third person. I did not think about that confusing the students. I had to really

think about how to explain that to them. Thankfully this was a very short read and kept the

students’ attention. Long reads can cause me to lose my students’ attention. They often want to

fidget in their desks. It seems to help when I have different students read the text instead of me

reading the entire story. My students also like to do the think-pair-share activities. When they
know that they will be doing that exercise then they tend to listen to the story. I was shocked

however by what they found interesting about Zac. They made up things that were not in the

story. I had to take a minute to explain that they must use the text to find what is interesting

about him. They are not to make up things. Once they understood that then they were able to

voice better ideas. Overall, the lesson went okay but next time I will explain their assignment

better.

Personal choice reflection: I selected this lesson because the third-grade students that are in

my classroom need a lot of word work. They missed some important instruction due to covid.

Many do not know how to decode or spell. I feel that word work has been a very important part

of each day. I am amazed by how much I am learning as I am teaching. Some things that I am

teaching has been something new for me to learn and also some that I had just forgotten.

Teaching these skills is making me a much better teacher. This will help me if I get a

Kindergarten, first grade or second grade class. I was scared to teach word work but now it is

one of my favorite things to teach. I have also found that sorting words is very important to

their learning. They get to see how many words are spelled alike. I think sorting words really

open their minds to see that spelling is not as hard as they first thought it was. I also have found

that teaching fluency is very important. It not only helps students learn new words, but it also

helps them read faster. When students read faster, they can comprehend much more of what

they are reading.
