Test II. Problem Solving.

Solve 3 out of five problems. Provide illustration if applicable. Show all your solutions and box your final answer.

1. Engineers are designing a box-shaped aquarium with a square bottom and an open top. The aquarium must
hold 500 ft³ of water. What dimensions should they use to create an acceptable aquarium with the least amount
of glass?
Hint: Consider the surface area.

2. The sum of two numbers is 50. Find the numbers such that the sum of their squares is a minimum.

3. A rectangle has a perimeter of 200 meters. What length and width yield the maximum are?
Hint: Perimeter of a rectangle= 2l+2 w ,
Area of a rectangle= lw

4. A closed box whose length is twice its width is to have a surface area of 192 in 2 . Find the dimensions of the box when
the volume is maximum.
Hint: Surface Area of a rectangular prism = 2lw +2 lh+2 hw

5. A rancher wants to enclose a rectangular area next to a river, using 120 m of fencing materials. He does not need
fencing for the side next to the river. What are the dimensions of the rectangle to maximize the area? What is the
maximum area?
Hint: Providing illustration will help you solve this problem.
