PHÁT ÂM
1. Phát âm s/es
Quy tắc 1: Phát âm là /s/ khi tận cùng từ là âm -p, -t, -k, -f, -gh khi chúng được phát âm
là -f và -th khi chúng được phát âm là /θ/
Eg: maps /mæps/, walks /w‫כ‬ks/, hats /hæts/, laughs /lɑːfs/, months /mʌnθs/, ploughs
Quy tắc 2: Phát âm là /iz/ khi tận dùng từ là âm -o, -s, -x, -ch, -sh, -z, -ce, -ge,
Eg: kisses /kisiz/, prizes /praɪziz/, wishes /wɪʃiz/, witches /wɪtʃiz/, garages
/ˈɡær.ɪdʒiz/, boxes /bɒksiz/
Quy tắc 3: Phát âm là /z/ với các từ còn lại.
Eg: sees /siːz/, wears /weərz/, bags /bæɡz/, dreams /driːmz/

2. Phát âm d/ed
Quy tắc 1: Đuôi ed được phát âm là /t/ khi động từ có âm cuối là /s/, /f/, /p/, /sh/, /ch/,
/k/, /th/ (khi được phát âm là /θ/)

Eg: looked /lʊkt/, kissed /kɪst/, washed /wɑːʃt/, matched /mætʃt/, laughed /lɑːft/,
breathed /breθt/…
Quy tắc 2: Đuôi ed được phát âm là /id/ khi động từ kết thúc bằng âm /t/ hoặc /d/.

Eg: decided /dɪˈsaɪdid/, started /stɑːtid/

Quy tắc 3: Đuôi ed được phát âm là /d/ với các trường hợp còn lại

Eg: played /pleɪd/, learned /lɜːnd/, used /juːzd/, …

Một số trường hợp bất quy tắc:

 naked (adj) /ˈneɪkɪd/: khỏa thân

 wicked (adj) /ˈwɪkɪd/: gian trá
 beloved (adj) /bɪˈlʌvd/ hoặc /bɪˈlʌvɪd/: yêu quý
 sacred (adj) /ˈseɪkrɪd/: thiêng liêng
 hatred (adj) /ˈheɪtrɪd/: căm ghét
 wretched (adj) /ˈretʃɪd/: khốn khổ
 rugged (adj) /ˈrʌɡɪd/: lởm chởm, gồ ghề
  ragged (adj) /ˈræɡɪd/: rách rưới, tả tơi
 dogged (adj) /ˈdɒɡɪd/: kiên cường
 learned (adj) /ˈlɜːnɪd/ learned (v) /lɜːnd/
 blessed (adj) /ˈblesɪd/: may mắn blessed (v) /ˈblest/: ban phước lành
 cursed (v) /kɜːst/: nguyền rủa cursed (adj) /ˈkɜːsɪd/: đáng ghét
 crabbed (adj) /ˈkræbɪd/: chữ nhỏ, khó đọc crabbed (v) /kræbd/: càu nhàu, gắt gỏng
 crooked (adj) /ˈkrʊkɪd/: xoắn, quanh co crooked (V) /ˈkrʊkt/: lừa đảo
 aged (adj) /ˈeɪdʒɪd/: lớn tuổi

TRỌNG ÂM
1. Trọng âm của những từ có 2 âm tiết
a) N/adj bằng 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm thường rơi vào âm 1: picture, handsome, …
Ngoại lệ: police, polite, machine, museum, mistake, guitar…
- account, ahead, afraid, above, about, …
b) V bằng 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm thường rơi vào âm 2: destroy, begin, suggest, …
Ngoại lệ: listen, visit, borrow, happen, open, offer, answer, promise, travel, vanish, finish,
manage, …

2. Những từ kết thúc bằng đuôi sau thì trọng âm thường rơi vào đuôi trước đó
__tion: invitation, combination, competition, revolution
__sion: decision, comprehension, permission (-television)
__ic/ics: electric, economic, physics (-politics)
__ial/ical: essential, pratical, chemical, industrial
__ity: ability, neccesity, activity
__itive: positive, cognitive, sensitive, competitive
__logy: biology, technology
__graphy: geography, photography
__ious: delicious, anxious, serious
__ian: electrician, physician

3. Những đuôi kết thúc bằng đuôi “ate, ary” thì trọng âm thường rơi vào đúng
âm tiết cách nó 2 âm
__ate: considerate. delicate, liberate, approximate
__ary: necessary, dictionary, january
 4. Những từ kết thúc bằng đuôi “y/al” thì trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3
từ dưới lên: industry, company, factory, history, hospital, capital

5. Những từ kết thúc bằng đuôi sau thì trọng âm thường rơi vào chính đuôi đó
__ee: agree, degree, guarantee, employee (-coffee, committee)
__eer: volunteer, career, engineer, mountaineer
__ese: Vietnamese, chinese, Japanese
__tain (chỉ áp dụng cho động từ): complain, maintain, attain, obtain
__aire/esque: millionaire, billionaire, picturesque
__ental/entative/entary: environmental, representative, elementary

Chú ý: Tiền tố, hậu tố thường không làm thay đổi vị trí trọng âm của từ
