PART 1: PRONUNCIATION

I. QUY TẮC PHÁT ÂM NHỮNG TỪ CÓ ĐUÔI “S/ES”

Quy tắc 1: Phát âm là /s/ khi tận cùng từ bằng -p, -k, -t, -f, -th (θ)
VD: stops [stɒps]; works [wɜ:ks]; Laughs /lɑːfs/, Breaths /breθs/
/f/: cliffs, sniffs, beliefs, laughs, graphs, apostrophes (phụ âm “-gh” và “-ph” ở đây được
phát âm là /f/)
Quy tắc 2: Phát âm là /iz/ khi tận cùng từ bằng -s,-ss,-ch,-sh,-x,-z,-o,-ge,-ce
VD: misses /misiz/ ; watches [wɒtʃiz] passes /pɑːsiz/ changes /ˈtʃeɪndʒɪz/
Quy tắc 3: Phát âm là /z/ đối với những từ còn lại
VD: study - studies; supply-supplies….

*Các trường hợp đặc biệt của đuôi -ed
Một số từ kết thúc bằng -ed được dùng làm tính từ/danh từ, đuôi -ed được phát âm là /id/:
1. aged / eɪdʒid /(a): cao tuổi, lớn tuổi
aged / eɪdʒd /(Vpast): trở nên già, làm cho già cỗi
2. blessed /blesid/ (a): thần thánh, thiêng liêng
3. crooked / krʊkid/(a): cong, oằn, vặn vẹo
4. dogged / dɒɡdi /(a): gan góc, gan lì, bền bỉ
5. naked /neikid/(a): trơ trụi, trần truồng
6. learned / lɜːnid /(a): có học thức, thông thái, uyên bác learned / lɜːnd /(Vpast): học
7. ragged / ræɡid /(a): rách tả toi, bù xù
8. wicked /wikid/(a): tinh quái, ranh mãnh, nguy hại
9. wretched / ˈretʃɪd /(a): khốn khổ, bần cùng, tồi tệ

IV. Quy tắc phát âm đối với nguyên âm

Các nhóm chữ thường được phát âm thành /i:/

Nhóm chữ“ea”, hoặc “ea”+ phụ âm Sea, seat, please, heat, Break, Breakfast, great, steak,
trong các từ có 1 hoặc 2 âm teach, beat, easy, mean, measure, pleasure, pleasant,
tiết thường được phát âm thành leaf, leave, breathe deaf, death, weather, feather,
/i:/  breath,
 
  “ear” là /iə/.

Nhóm chữ“ee”, hoặc “ee”+ phụ âm tree, green, teen, teeth,  Beer, cheer, deer
trong từ một âm tiết thường được keep, wheel, feel, seed,  “eer” là /iə/.
phát âm thành /i:/ breed, sheet, speed

Nhóm chữ “ie” đứng trước nhóm Believe, chief, relieve,  

chữ “ve” hoặc “f” thường được achieve, brief, thief
phát âm thành /i:/

Hậu tố “-ese”  để chỉ quốc tịch hay Vietnamese, Chinese,  

ngôn ngữ thường được phát âm Japanese, Portuguese
thành /i:/

2. Các nhóm chữ thường được phát âm thành /ɔː/

Nhóm chữ“all” trong các từ một Call, fall, small, tall, all  
hoặc hai âm tiết thường được phát
âm thành /ɔː/

Nhóm chữ “au” đứng trước một Audience, author, Aunt, laugh, laughter, father
hoặc nhiều phụ âm thường được daughter, haunt, August được phát âm là /a:/
phát âm thành /ɔː/

Nhóm chữ “aw” hoặc “aw” cộng Law, lawn, awful,  

một phụ âm thường được phát âm awesome, draw
thành /ɔː/

Nhóm “wa” đứng trước hoặc hai Wall, water, walk  

phụ âm thường được phát âm
thành /ɔː/

Nhóm chữ “or” hoặc “ore” đứng For, port, short, distort, doctor, translator được phát âm
cuối từ hoặc trước một phụ âm trong report, or, therefore, là /ə/
từthường được phát âm thành /ɔː/ foresee, core, mentor

3. Các nhóm chữ được phát âm là /uː/

“oe” là  /ju/ (Examples: fuel,
 cue, due, duel) 

Nhóm chữ “ew” đứng cuối từ có 1 hoặc 2 drew, crew, flew, ”ew” là /ju/ (Examples: pew
âm tiết, thường được phát âm là /uː/. sewage, grew, few)

Nhóm “ui” đứng trước một phụ Bruise, fruit, juice  

âm, thường được phát âm là /uː/ ”ui” là /i:/ (Examples: build)
/bi:lt/

4. Các nhóm chữ thường được phát âm là /ei/

Rules Examples

Nhóm chữ“ay” đứng cuối một từ thường được Day, play, ashtray, stay
phát âm là /ei/.

Nhóm chữ “a” + phụ âm+”e” đứng cuối từ có một Plate, cake, pale, whale, safe, inhale
hoặc hai âm tiết thường được phát âm là /ei/.  

Nhóm chữ “ai” + phụ âm đứng cuối từ 1 hoặc 2 Mail, nail, sail, sailor, maid, paid, wait, gain, maintain,
âm tiết  thường được phát âm là /ei/. grain,

Chữ “a” đứng liền trước nhóm chữ kết thúc từ “- Nation, explanation, preparation
ion” và “ian” thường được phát âm là /ei/.

PART 2: STRESS
I. Quy tắc đánh dấu trọng âm theo phiên âm
- Danh từ và tính từ có 2 âm tiết, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất:
Vd: table, lucky, person, student ….
- Động từ và trạng từ có 2 âm tiết, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai:
Vd: decide, remain, maintain, between…
Nhược điểm: quy tắc này ko phải luôn đúng
Vd: alive, enter, bamboo
1. Trọng âm không bao giờ rơi vào âm /ə/ và âm /əu/
Ví dụ: teacher /ˈtiːtʃə(r)/
Learner /ˈlɜːnə(r)/
Danger /ˈdeɪndʒə(r)/
Hotel /həʊˈtel/
Chú ý: Nếu trong từ có cả âm /ə/ và âm /əu/ thì trọng âm rơi vào âm /əu/
Ví dụ: open /ˈəʊpən/

2. Trọng âm thường rơi vào nguyên âm dài, nguyên âm đôi hoặc âm cuối kết thúc với nhiều hơn

1. Các từ có đuôi -oo, -oon, - ade, - mental, -nental, -ain, -aire, - ee, -eer, -ese, -ique, -esque, -ette,-
nel trọng âm rơi vào chính đuôi đó.

Chú ý:
- Hầu hết các tiền tố của từ không nhận trọng âm un-, in-, dis-, il-, mis-, non-, re-, en-, inter-…
Ví dụ: rewrite, impossible, discover …
- Danh từ ghép và tính từ ghép thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất
Ví dụ: birthday, bookshop, carsick, trustworthy …
(Tính từ ghép có dạng: bad-tempered, ill-treated, well-done, short-sighted trọng âm rơi vào âm
tiết thứ 2)
- Những hậu tố sau không ảnh hưởng đến trọng âm của từ: - ment, -ship, -ness, -hood, -ing, -en, -ful,
-less, -able, -some, -dom, -ledge
