CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This is an organizational study about KSE LTD. KSE stands for Kerala Solvent
Extraction Ltd.Company deals with the production of cattle feed products. Solvent
extraction usually used to recover a component either a solid or liquid . The sample is
contracted with a solvem that will dissolve the solute of interest. Solvent extraction is
a major commercial important to the chemical and biochemical industries, as often the
most efficient method of separation of valuable products from complex feed stocks or
reaction products. Some extraction techniques involve partition of two mandible
liquids, other involve either continuous extractions or batch extractions. Because of
environmental concerns, many common liquid-liquid processes have been modified to
either utilize benign solvents or move frugal processes such as solid phase extraction.
The solvent van is vapor, super-critical fluids or liquid and the sample can be gas,
liquid or sold.

The Indian feed industry is about 35 years old. It is mainly restricted to dairy and
poultry feed manufacturing the beef and pork industry is almost non-existent. Which
represents only 5 percent of the total potential, and feed exports are not very high .The
Indian Animal feed market was an estimated -79.5 million tons in 2014 (all livestock
& aqua}. However, the actual market is much smaller because a large portion of this
market is serviced by the unorganized (grazing) sector.

The country has entered into a period of liberalization and this is bounded to influence
the live stock industry. The per capita consumption of milk, eggs and broiler meat will
grow. The Indian feed industry is undergoing a very exciting phase of growth for the
next decade.

1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP

The overall objective is to conduct a study on organizational structure. The following
are the specific objectives of the study.

 To understand about the functional areas of the company

 To understand the organizational structure of KSE
 To understand the product profile of KSE

1.2 INDUSTRY ANALISYS

Growth of milk sector has occurred mainly through co-operative efforts. This sector
also plays an important role in achieving food security, reducing global poverty,
generating employment opportunities for women, and providing a regular source of
income for rural households Moreover, in developing economies, landless and poor
farmers are actively involved in dairying as an essential means of livelihood.
According to the FAO 2018 report, more than 500 million impoverished people
depend mainly on livestock, and many of them are small and marginal dairy farmers.
Additionally, dairy development helps in boosting rural economic growth and
empowering rural women. Moreover, 150 million children around the world receive
benefits from milk through school feeding programs (Bulletin of the International
Dairy Federation, 2020). The dairy sector plays a vital role in achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially SDG 1-No poverty, SDG 3-Good

1

health, SDG S Gender equality, SDG 8-Good jobs and economic growth, and SDG
10-Reduced inequalities--and it helps in improving lives and transforming the global
economy.

The solvent industry has achieved a phenomenal progress and at present there are 520
units having overall do cake or oil sees processing capacity of more than 25.6 million
tons per year. The solvent extraction plays an important role in the oil economy.
Solvent extraction in india was started m 1945. Thus in 1996, KSE Ltd entered the
cattle feed industry by setting up new plant for manufacturing ready mixed cattle feed.
During the last three decades KSE has been acting as a leader in ready mixed cattle
feed industry of the country. Today, KSE limited command the resources,
manufacture a range of live stock feed in high volumes with high quality

1.2.1 DAIRY INDUSTRY

India is the largest milk producer. India is ranked 1st in milk production contributing
23 per cent of global milk production, Milk production in the country has grown at a
compound annual growth rate of about 6.2 per cent to reach 209.96 man tones in
2020-21 from 146.31 m tonnes in 2014 15.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has issued detailed operational

scheme guidelines and has launched an online portal for "Production Linked Incentive
Scheme for Food Processing industry (PLISFPI) with an outlay of $1.48n to support
the creation of global food manufacturing champions commensurate with Indus
natural resource endowment and support Indian brands of food products in the
international markets.

The development of India's day sector started through a program called "Operation
Flood launched on 13 January 1970, which was the world's largest dairy development
program and a landmark project of India's National Dairy Development Board
(NODB). It spurred a phased, multipronged approach that included tax mentees, food
quality standards, subsidies on inputs, infrastructure provisions such as cold chain and
electrification. Against this backdrop of broad government support for farmers and
allied intermediaries, dozens of private dairies have emerged in the organized sector,
private dairy companies are investing in developing an efficient milk procurement
network as well as marketing of liquid milk and value added products. It is
noteworthy that the percentage of milk being handled by the private sector has
exceeded that of the cooperative sector. This ratio is expected to further increase in
favor of the private sector in the coming years.

1.2.2 THE FUTURE OF THE INDIAN FEED INDUSTRY

The Indian feed Industry is expected to grow tremendously in the future and become
one of the leading feed manufacturers and exporters across the globe. However, the
industry needs to explore and exploit the huge sources of growth by taking adequate
measures and overcoming the challenges it currently faces.

Indian feed industry is about 50 years old and it primarily consists of cattle feed and
poultry feed segments. Cattle feed industry in India is gradually evolving into an
organized sector and the feed manufactures are increasingly using modern and
sophisticated methods that seek to incorporate best global practices. Indian cattle feed
industry has got high growth potential given the country stop position among the
world nations in respect of livestock population and also the high expected growth
rate of about 4 per cent. Compounded Cattle Feed (CCF) products, particularly the
branded ones are fast gaining popularity India, including in rural areas. The major
drivers for the growing demand for cattle feed are the factors like (1) shrinkage of
open land for cattle grazing, urbanization and resultant shortage of conventionally
used cattle feeds, and (u) Introduction of high yield cattle requires specialized feeds.
Earlier research studies by the present authors based on the feedback from the farmers
have revealed the good growth prospects of the branded cattle feed industry, the feed
consumption pattern and the relatively high share of branded feeds, feed consumption
pattern based on product types (like, pellet and mash), composition of cattle feed
market and the relatives hares of major brands, the major factors influencing the
purchasing decisions etc. As a continuation of the earlier amadies, this study makes a
closer look into the exact nature of the growth potential of the market from a macro
perspective, feedback from the fickle study with dealers and industry experts and
relative significance of factors influencing buying decisions.

Feed, which is produced in more than 130 countries, forms an important sector.
Various species are found and reared in these regions for deriving milk, meat, protein,
and other products. It accounts for a major component of the animal rearing process
as it adds a significant cost to the production system. Feed requirements vary across
regions as per the animal population and their economic importance in the region. The
feed industry contributes significantly to the well-being of millions of people globally,
in terms of economic and nutritional factors. Factors such as the rising consumption
of animal meat. growing demand for other livestock products, and an increase in
oilseed production contribute to the growth of the global feed industry.

The Asia Pacific region dominates the feed industry globally due to the presence of a
large number of feed mills in the region. India is one of the largest and fastest-
growing feed markets in the world. According to the Caltech Global Feed Survey
Summary, India is among the top 10 countries producing feed across the globe. Feed
manufacturing on a commercial and scientific basis was initiated around 1965, with
the main objective of catering to the needs of dairy cattle. The Indian feed industry
has evolved and developed over the years. Currently, poultry, aqua, and dairy account
for a major share of the overall feed demand.
Cattle feed industry, a major ingredient of animal feed industry is currently evolving
from a fragmented industry into an organized sector. The feed manufactures are
increasingly adopting modern and sophisticated methods in an effort to incorporate
best global practices.

In Plant Training Report

The cattle population is expected to grow at compounded annual growth rate of 4 per
cent. The way the rural farmers makes their purchases of feed and have their buying
priorities is quite different from those of their urban counterparts. Thus, the factors
influencing the buying behavior of farmers and their relative significance needs to
ascertained for the meaningful formulation of marketing strategies for cattle feed
products. Equally important is the need to consider the feedback from dealers of such
products and also industry experts in this field.

In Plant Training Report

It was in 1963 that Kerala Solvent Extractions Ltd, now known as KSE Ltd, entered
the Solvent Extraction Industry, setting up the very first solvent extraction plant in
Kerala. The solvent extraction plant went on stream in 1972 and m 1976, a new plant
was set up to manufacture ready mixed cattle feed. KSE Limited is a public limited
company with around 4500 shareholders. The shares are listed in Bombay Stock
Exchange (BSE). We are the largest manufacturer of compound cattle feed in private
sector in the country. The last three decades have seen KSE emerging as a leader in
solvent extraction and ready mixed cattle feed in the country. Today KSE commands
the resources, expertise and infrastructure to manufacture a range of livestock feed in
high volumes, coconut oil from coconut oil cake and refined edible oil. KSE has also
entered in the field of milk procurement and processing KS Milk, KS Ghee and Vesta
Ice Cream have become popular in many districts in Kerala. Driven by a commitment
to high standards of quality, KSE has not only won customer confidence but also
national recognition through several awards and accolades. With modern
manufacturing facilities spread over three states, KSE caters to the vast belt stretching
across Southern India. Since the early days, KSE has endeavored to supply its
products to customers through an extensive network of dealers and retailers, which
form a dedicated force behind the success of KSE. It is a matter of pride that KSE is a
household name today. With a strong commitment to customers and product quality
and being cost competitive, KSE stands poised to meet new challenges

2.1.2 ORGIN OF THE ORGANISATION

Kerala Solvent Extractions now known as KSB was established in 1963 by a handful
of coconut millers in and around Irinjalakuda. Driven by a commitment to high
standards of quality, KSE has not only won customer confidence but also national
recognition through several awards and accolades, with modern manufacturing
facilities spread over three states, KSE caters to the vast belt stretching across
Southern India and enjoys a significant presence in exports too. Since the early days
KSE has endeavor to supply products to customers through an extensive network of
dealers and retailers, which form a dedicated force behind the success of KSE. It is a
matter of pride that KSE is a house hold today, the last three decades have seen KSE
emerging as a leader in solvent extraction and ready mixed cattle feed in the country.

Today KSE commands the resources, expertise and infrastructure arrange of livestock
fees in high volumes. Coconut oil from coconut cake and refined edible oil with a
strong commitment to customer and product quality and being cost competitive, KSE
stands poised to meet new challenges. The copra crushing industry has been in
existence in Kerala for decades and has been the most important basic industry UN
state utilizing the indigenous raw material via, coconut. During the 60's the oil millers
in Kerala used wooden village Ghani's operated by bullocks which left about 80
percent oil in the cake. Later iron rotaries driven by electricity were used but they left
about 12 to 13 percent oil in the cake. But in the other part of the world including
other states in India giant expellers came up following solvent extraction plants.

Thus, oil millers outside Kerala obtained an extra amount of oil by crushing copra
subsequently processing the cake through solvent extraction plants. This new
technology enabled the millers outside the cake to take away a large portion of copra
from our state, starving our local Industry. We could not keep the pace with the time
due to the lack of capital and had to face tough competition from other states. In 1960,

6 Dept Mechanical Engineering

a committee was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr. Loganathan to study the
feasibility of starting new industries In Kerala. Based on the techno-economicPURCHASE
survey
conducted, the committee recommended for the established of the threeDEPARTMENT solvent
extraction plants in Kerala and one of them in Thrissur district. They decided to stat it
as a public limited company, issuing shares to almost all the oil millers who were
interested. For this purpose, on 1 May 1963, a meeting was held which was presided
over by Sri. K. V. Devassi and attended 17 members. Sri K. V. Devassi was elected as
the chairman and 10 others were elected as directors. The Directors were Srl. K.L.
Francis, Sri. T.O Paul, Sri.N.P. Venidttarama Ayyer, Sri M. 5 Menon, Sri A. P.
George, Sri. E. T Joseph, Sri. P.L. Ouseph, Sri, M.C. Paul, v M. P Kochudevassi On
25th September 1963, the KSE got certificate of incorporation from the Registrar of
Companies, Kerala. The first formed meeting was held on 20th October 1963 and in
this meeting Sri. K. V. Devassi was elected as the chairman and Sri K.L. Francis was
elected as the Managing Director. On the road of success there were many hurdles in
the beginning mobilization of capital caused the greatest challenge. But determination
and optimism paid off. The solvent extraction plant was on stream in 1972 and in
1976 a new plant was set up at Irinjalakuda to manufacture ready nixed cattle feed,
which was a pioneering step. Thus the KSE Limited has given an important map of
Kerala and showed us how to convert a waste material into national income.

2.5.1 OPERATION

The whole operation is automatic which is programmed to the computer placed at the
Plant operator's room. After feeding of raw materials to the hopper, the computer
asthmatically takes the amount of raw material needed for the batch as per the chief
nutritionist formula. The bagging is also done automatically. The plant operator is
responsible for the change in the percentage of raw material in the batch. The raw
materials are fed to hopper which itself is a weighing machine; It allows only the
appropriate amount of raw material to enter the production.

PRODUCTION PLANT

In KSE Irinjalakuda unit, production takes place in the cattle (Oed plant)

2.5.2CATTLE FEED PLANT

In this plant the company uses different types of cakes according to their availability
apart from other materials of the company such as coconut cake, sun flower cake,

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSIONS
KSE Ltd. Company has been running successfully over years. They have seen many
up and downs in market still they have become successfully. The reason behind this is
the management and the workers. They jointly work together for the good will and for
the profit of the company at times it needed most. Most of all they have given only
good quality products to the costumers according to their needs. Perhaps this is the
reason for the success of the company.
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have
gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. I achieved several of my
learning goals, however for some the conditions did not permit. Especially in a
distribution industry where marketing is the main objective as a marketing student I
believe choosing this industry helped me to learn more about the subject of marketing.
I was able to have particle experience in marketing. During this internship period I
was confronted with many techniques, procedures, and behavior patterns etc. which
have been studied in the classrooms. For example, in order to conduct a sale we need
to understand many psychological traits of the customers. During this internship I
faced a lot of such circumstances in order to carry out a sale. This internship helped
