Small organisms, such as amoeba, do not require a circulatory system because their surface
area to volume ratio is large, so substances can diffuse across their cell membrane with ease.
Large organisms, such as humans, do require a circulatory system because their surface area
to volume ratio is small, making it difficult for substances to enter and leave cells through
diffusion. Additionally, some substances need to travel from one part of the organism to
another, so a circulatory system is required.
The circulatory system in humans consists of the heart, the blood and the blood vessels.
