Part B
Plot a graph of Force VS Extension from the table in Part A. Then find the gradient on the graph. (5 points)
Gradient of Graph
Gradient = y2 – y1/x2 – x1
Gradient = 50 – 25/0.225 – 0.150
Gradient = 25/0.075
Gradient = 333.33 N/m
Part C.
Answer the following questions below and show your working out
1. What is the spring constant of a spring that needs a force of 2.5 N to be compressed from 30 cm to 25 cm? (3 points)
Ans.: F=kx
k=F/x
k= 2.5N / (30-25cm)
k = 2.5N/5cm
k= 2.5N/0.05m
k= -50N/m

2. Two springs are said to be in parallel when used as in the figure below. Therefore, sum of the spring constants are k1 + k2= k.
What is the magnitude of the force required to stretch two springs of constants k1 = 80 N / m and k2 = 160 N / m by 4 cm if
they are in parallel? (3 points)

k = k1 + k2 = 80 N / m + 160 N / m

F=kxe

= 240 N / m × 4 cm

= 240 N / m × 0.04 m

=9.6N

Magnitude = 9.6N.
3. What will be the extension of this spring (k= 15N/m) if the load is

a) 4N (4 marks)

a): e= f/k

e=4/15

e=0.27m

b) 75 g?

b): e= f/k

= (75x9.8)/15

= 735/15

= 49m

4. A spring with a spring constant of 8 N/m has a mass hang on it so that it stretches 8 cm. Calculate how much mass the spring is
supporting (4 marks)
F=kxe
=8 x 0.08 = 0.64N
Mass = Force = mass x gravity
Force = mass x gravity
0.64 = mass x 9.8
Mass=0.64 /9.8
Mass = 0.066kg or 66 grams
