IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS
EFFECTIVE SEISMIC WEIGHT:
Reference : ASCE 7-2010

Pls. note : Above the base

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
SEISMIC BASE SHEAR:

Pls. note : SDs will be calculated based on values of S1 & Ss as per Geotechnical report

SEISMIC STORY SHEAR:

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
WIND BASE SHEAR:

In Staad these values can be feed to generate load automatically

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
Wind Base Shear = Design Wind Pressure x Subjected surface area of the structure
In Staad Design wind pressure can be calculated based on above equations and input manually
based on surface area being contributed.

WIND STORY SHEAR:

IT IS PART OF WIND BASE SHEAR SHARED BY PARTICULAR STORY BASED ON SURFACE AREA
WHICH IS SUBJECTED TO WIND PRESSURE

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
STORY DRIFT:
The horizontal deflection at the top of the story
relative to the bottom of the story

Earthquake forces

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
STORY DRIFT RATIO:

The story drift divided by the story height

e.g.
Story drift Ratio ( second floor ) = d3
Height of the second floor

Note : Staad does not provide story drift ratio but providing
maximum drifts / displacements.

ALLOWABLE STORY DRIFTS FOR SEISMIC FORCES:

Note : Above table does not mention about drift for full building height

0.02hx = hx/50 , hx = L in staad

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
ALLOWABLE STOREY DRIFTS FOR WIND FORCES:

BNBC ( Bangladesh National Building Code based on ASCE )

0.0017 l = l/600 , l = L in staad

ALLOWABLE STORY DRIFTS AS PER RC GEM -2016:

EXAMPLE
Consider a frame from a building

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
STAAD OUTPUT:

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
Drift at EL 10.04 ( Upper Roof )
Load case 13 : DL + WLz
Drift = 8.628 mm (at the top of structure)
Ratio = L/ 1175
I.e. 10400 / 1175 = 8.628 mm
Allowable drift = L/ 600 = 10400 / 600 = 17.33 mm
Actual drift < Allowable drift , Hence OK.

STORY DRIFT DUE TO SEISMIC FORCES

w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
w w w. r c j y. g o v. s a
Maximum drift at EL. 7.1 = 6.519 mm
Drift at EL. 3.75 at vertically aligned node for same load
case = 3.273 mm
