A. Write the letter corresponds to your answer on the space before the number.

A 1. A 6.
A 2. C 7.
A 3. A 8.
A 4. A 9.
A 5. A 10.
B. Expound the following with the maximum of five sentences.

1. What functions do membrane proteins and endomembrane system serve in cell transport and
trafficking?
Answer: When we talk about membrane proteins its function is to transport a protein that spends the
membrane may provide a hydrophilic channel that is selective for a particular solute. Some transport
proteins hydrolyze ATP as an energy source to actively pump a substance across the membrane. Also,
endomembrane system permits various functions of eukaryotic cell to be compartmentalized, allowing a
higher degree of cell specialization.

2. How will you distinguish imbibition from osmosis and diffusion? Give each an example.
Answer: Imbibition is the process of water absorption through a solid substance for example seeds swell
up as they take water. Whereas, osmosis is the process of movement of water from higher concentration
to lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane for example when we sit in the bathtub or
submerge our fingers in the water for a while, they got wrinkly. And that is too because of osmosis. The
skin of our fingers absorbed water and get expanded or bloated leading to the pruned or wrinkled fingers.
And also, in diffusion particles move from an area of higher concentration to one lower concentration
until equilibrium is reached for example dipping the tea bags in hot water will diffuse the tea in hot
water.

3. How is the extracellular matrix organized? What is its role in cell interactions?
Answer: The extracellular matrix contains a number of noncollagen proteins that typically have multiple
domains, each with specific binding sites for other matrix macromolecules and for receptors on the
surface of cells. These proteins therefore contribute to both organizing the matrix and helping cells
attach to it. The role of ECM in cell interaction is not only does ECM provide structural support to cells
and tissues, but it is also responsible for generating cell signals that are capable of affecting cell
proliferation and differentiation, cell migration, and cell adhesion.

4. Do you agree that cell wall is an extracellular matrix? Why yes or why not?
Answer: Yes, because all cells in solid tissue ae surrounded by extracellular matrix. Both plants and
animals have ECM. The cell wall of plant cell is a type of extracellular matrix. In animals, the ECM can
surround cells as fibrils that contract the cells on all sides, or as a sheet called basement membrane that
cells sit on. The extracellular matrix not only provides structural support to cells tissues, but also plays
important roles in regulating the behavior of cells in multicellular organisms.
