Platform Tuning also requires a measuring tape
Follow the book exactly! Failure to do so can produce a platform that will remove body
parts, especially if the torque pot V/F is set to high on Fincor/Lovejoy Motor controllers.

Use the SP 700 manual, since platform tuning is identical for both platforms, except for
the Wrap Around dimension.
Open the manual to Page 75, Section 5 Platform Tuning
Turn to page 76
Check the Health Reports [E] Electronics page. Look at the top right hand corner of any
health report page. Make sure the variable Safety Interrupt is reset.
If it is set use the information on the Electronics page to correct the fault.
Check for alarms while tuning the frame. Refer to Section 11, page 247 for the following
alarms.
Motor Stopped by Obstacle - usually the Fincor motor controller is set up incorrectly. The
torque pot V/F is set too low. The difference between scanning and not scanning can be the
width of a screw driver blade, on either side of the correct setting.
Head Speed Inconsistency - usually results from improper setup of Minimum Velocity
Setup of the Motor controller and Basic Smart Platform Tuning -Head Position Calibration
and Automatic Motor Controller tuning are the only parts of ft, that needs to be performed
as part of tuning.
All other entries can be made using the Health Pages on the Smart Platform Service Work
Station.

Look at the Platform Tuning menu.

We will perform Manual Servo Calibration, Menu Item 6 first
Then perform head position and Motor controller Calibration, Menu Item 1.
Menu Item 2 has an asterisk, because it is special
If you replace:
A motor controller
A Scanning motor
Or if someone plays with the pot settings on the motor controller
Menu item 2 will accommodate the changes, without having to disturb the position setup
performed in Menu Item 1
You can use ft, display status, Menu Item 4 Current Scanner Request List, to determine
what the scanner should be doing.
You can use menu Item 8, Engineering displays to trouble shoot encoder problems.

Motor drive Setup (ABB ACS-100)

Set MC Slow Tune Speed to 40 (See page 4-12, of this section)
The ABB ACS-100 drive comes pre programmed for use in SP700 or 1200 Smart
Platforms.
Panel operations are described on page 81.
The drive must be in local to access the parameters
202 Unom works like adjusting the Torque pot. Set to 125, for SP 700s
406 Const Speed works like setting Boost. Set to 5
Check the parameters
Return the panel to REMOTE when done.
Warning!
The Control Panel is removable. Removing the control Panel while in LOCAL causes
an ERROR, indicated by a Flashing RED LED. This ERROR can only be reset by
replacing the panel on the drive and turning the Smart Platform Power OFF and
ON.

Setting MCjogCommand to 50 de-tunes the servo program, to allow precision setting of

the Boost pot.
In step 11, instead of 6 inches or 150 mm in one second, try 60 inches or 150 cm in ten
seconds. This is easier to time.
Start at 150 and work down. 150 is about 8.5 seconds
Most platforms tune at 120 to 128, depending on length.
The book does not mention V/F at all. This pot should be set to 4 on short platforms or 6
on long platforms. You should be able to stop the scanning head, with some resistance. If
V/F is too low you get Head Stopped By Obstacle errors. If set too high the head will try
scan through anything in its way. It could knock you into the broke pit, or off a ladder.
Set FMAX to 5. Increase this if machine crew complains about how long the platform tales
to go On Sheet.

Basic Tuning Procedure

Start with Step 1, page 90. Follow the procedure exactly. These comments clarify some of
the steps.
If you have completed Menu Item 6, you can go directly to Menu Item 1, by typing 1.
Select the type of platform you are tuning
Enter 1 for an SP700
Enter 2 for an SP1200
Enter 3 for a Smart U-frame
Select the setup units
1 = centimeters, 2 = inch
The Smart Platform doesn’t know inches from centimeters. All internal calculations are
done in centimeters and converted to inch if the flag is set.
Steps 6, 7, 8
Push the head package against the Home End Column, as shown in figure 5-7
The wrap around distance is 1 inch or 2.54 cm for SP700s
The wrap around distance is 5.25 for SP1200s (note the may vary by 3 inches, depending
on the position of the mechanical stops
When you enter your measurement, the platform adds head width and calculates the
distance form the end column to the center line of the Basis Weight window.
17.625 inches or 44.5 cm, for SP1200s
17.775 inches for SP700s

Verify the value by splitting the heads. Leave the upper head alone, move the lower head.
The tac is connected to the upper head
measure the distance, end column to center of the window. The value should be with in.25
mm or .01 inch.
If the value is correct enter n
Step 9. The software will ask if you want to use automatic or manual tuning. Say m, for
manual
Automatic mode never stops in the same place twice. Where the head stops depends on
how fast it was going when it hit the limit switch
Press enter when the head package is positioned at the far end column
Read the value at the service work station and verify by measuring
Say n to complete this part of the setup.
Step 10. The software asks about a centerline. This feature is only for Tetra-Pak Scanners.
Paper Scanners do not use this feature. Type n

Step 14. Move the head package to the center of the platform, before Step 14.
If the head is left sitting on a limit switch it will not move! The platform will abort
automatic servo tune process
If you have an ACS-110 drive controller, go to page 4 of the F -frame health report,
set slow dac to 40.This is a more realistic number, for the new controller, since it is more
sensitive and capable of slower speeds.
At the completion of the tuning process the software will perform automatic gstores.
Step 18, page 98, the Vmin Self-tuning flag is accessed by selecting the F- Frame health
report
Press F6 until you have the Servo Setup parameters.
Use The TAB key and arrow keys to select DDC Vmin Self-Tuning. Turn on, by pressing
the space bar.
The platform should be scanning for this feature to work. When the heas is scanning turn
on Vmin Self-tuning for four scans. After four scans turn the flag off. The software will
select a value for Vmin that ensures proper scanning.
Beginning at Page 98, to the end of the Section, all entries are made using the [F] - Frame
Health report.
Use the position values, on the next page. These are example values, for laboratory use
only. Actual values for an individual smart Platform will be determined by sheet position
on the paper machine.
