EXPLORE

Research on indigenous Filipino knowledge on the following areas:

Health This idea is fundamental to Filipino self-care habits and it permeates all
interactions and social interactions. This theory holds that whereas illness
brought on by humoral pathology and stress is typically the result of some
imbalance, wellness is assumed to be the product of balance. Illness and
disorder are brought on by abrupt changes from "hot" to "cool."

Farming Indigenous farming techniques are local knowledge that has been gathered
over time by farmers in a community as a result of their experiences and
methods. Because indigenous knowledge developed from each community's
distinct history of survival, no two communities use precisely the same
farming techniques.
Fishing The most popular fishing techniques involve the use of small nets, fish
arrows, and locally constructed fish traps. In the study locations, site-specific
cultural beliefs, practices, and knowledge systems about freshwater fish and
shells were also documented. When working with fish and shell resources, it
was often believed that invisible spirits were involved; as a result, certain
actions were forbidden and prudence was advised. Results indicate that the
indigenous conservation and management methods in these places have been
impacted by the many influences at play.

Astronomy They employed star navigation, our predecessors must have been aware of the
stars. In spite of reading about it in Spanish chronicles, descriptions of sun
and moon worship, and the tons of themes and depictions (jewelry, tattoos,
artifacts, etc.) there really isn't anything I could uncover concerning how
ancient Filipinos employed heavenly bodies in their daily life.

EVALUATE

In this lesson, you have learned about the different indigenous knowledge of the Philippines. In that
regard, you will be asked to think critically and answer the following the questions related to the
foregoing discussion:

1. What is the role of indigenous knowledge in the development of indigenous science? Indigenous
peoples have extensive knowledge of the environment and the ecological relationships that
exist within it, owing to decades of personal experience combined with that of their
ancestors. There are numerous opportunities for such knowledge to benefit modern science
and natural resource management.

2. What is the role of indigenous science in the development of science and technology in the
Philippines? Good science will contact the local indigenous people and request their

traditional knowledge (observations) on the subject under investigation. Better science will
also compensate them (financially or otherwise, as agreed) for the expertise they provide.

3. How do society and culture influence the development of science and technology? Through its
products and processes, technology has an impact on society. The direction of technological
development is influenced by social needs, attitudes, and values. Science and technology
have advanced thanks to the contributions of many different people from various cultures
and times in history.
