Shape and Dimensions 3.1 Metal Wire Cloth for Sieves of Metal Wire Cloth 3.1.1 The cloth shall be woven rectangularly from metal wire, as shown in Fig, 1 (plain weave). The cloth not less than 3.35 mm in nominal size of aperture may be woven from snaky metal wire to prevent the mesh from loosening. On the other hand, the cloth not more than 63 ym in nominal sizes of apertures may be of twill weave, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 1. Appearance 4.1 The sieving medium shall be free from weaving faults, punching faults and other defects detrimental to use. 4.2 The sieving medium shall be fixed to the frame free of distortion and slackening, and its support shall be so constructed as to avoid clogging of test material. 4 Z 8801-1982 5. Materials ‘The sieves shall be made from the materials specified below or those having the quality at least equivalent thereto. Inspection 6.1 Sieves of Metal Wire Cloth The diameter of metal wire, maximum size of aperture, average aperture size and the number of apertures exceeding 1/2 of the maximum tolerance in size shall be inspected with a suitable instru- ment (+) by the methods of (1) to (4), and they shall meet the requirements of Attached Tables 1 and 2 and Appendix Tables 1 and 2 and, in addition, for the sieves of metal wire cloth of 22 to 1000 ym in nominal sizes of apertures, the number of apertures exceeding 1/2 of the maximum tolerance in size shall not be 5 % or over. However, where the number of apertures is 10 or less, the whole apertures shall be inspected. Note ¢) For the sieve of 5 mm or less in nominal size of aperture, inspection shall be made by magnifying the apertures with a measuring projector specified in JIS B 7184 or one at least equivalent thereto in performance. ‘The magnification for the inspection of apertures shall be as given in the table below. Nominal size of aperture of sieve | © ™™ to 500 um | 425 to 250 um | 212 to 22 wm ‘Magnification 5 to 10 times 20 to 50 times | 80 to 100 times @) @) @) @) 6.2 5 Z sgol-1982 Diameter of Metal Wire Out of the whole area of the metal wire cloth sieve, choose arbitrarily not less than five measuring places separately along the warp and weft, and determine the average for the whole of the metal wire, Maximum Size of Aperture Over the whole area of the metal wire cloth sieve, measure the sizes of a few apertures in an area where the sizes of apertures look excessive, and take the maximum of the measured values. Average Size of Aperture Measure the overall length not less than 10 apertures in not less than five places separately along the warp and weft, subtract the diameter of metal wire determined in (1) above from the quotient of measured length divided by the number of apertures, and calculate the average of such residues. Apertures Exceeding 1/2 of Maximum Tolerance in Size Examine the whole sieving medium, and count the number of apertures exceeding 1/2 of the maximum tolerance in size in an area where apertures look excessive. Calculate the quotient of the number divided by the number of whole apertures. Sieve of Metal Perforated Plate The aperture size and pitch of apertures shall be inspected by the methods of (1) and (2) with a vernier calliper complying with JIS B 7507, and the results shall meet the requirements of Attached Table 3 and Appendix Table 3. However, where the number of apertures is 10 or under, the whole apertures shall be inspected. a) @) 6.3 Size of Aperture Choose not less than 10 apertures, and measure their diameters for round holes, and measure their opposite side distances for square holes. Pitch of Apertures Select arbitrarily not less than 10 measuring places from the whole sieving medium, and measure the pitch of apertures. Appearance and Materials The sieves shall be inspected on appearance and materials, and the results shall meet the requirements of 4, and 5. 6 Z 8801-1982 Designation of Products ‘The sieves shall be designated by the number or title of this standard °), type, shape of hole (for sieves of metal perforated plate), arrangement (for sieves of metal square hole perforated plate), nominal size of aperture, and weaving type (for twill weave) in this order. Example: JIS Z 8801 ~ Sieve of metal wire cloth - 106 mm Test sieve - Metal wire cloth - 63 ym ~ twill weave JIS Z 8801 - Sieve of metal perforated plate ~ round hole - 5 mm ‘Test sieve - Metal perforated plate - square hole in-line pattern - 10 mm Note 2) Where the dimensions are in compliance with Appendix, "number or title of the standard" shall be followed by "Appendix". Example: JIS Z 8801 - Appendix - sieve of metal wire cloth - 25.4 mm 8. Marking Marking shall be made by attaching a metal plate stating the following particulars to the frame: (1) For sieve of metal wire cloth: Size of aperture, diameter of metal wire For sieve of metal perforated plate: size of aperture, pitch of holes, plate thickness Remark: Where the dimensions are in compliance with Appendix, "size of aperture" shall be preceded by the mark " @" meaning the former standard.
