Extended Internship

Name of Student: Nayar Sultana

Student ID: 3935372
Being a business management student, I had always hoped to gain leadership experience. It was

a true honor to work as a shift manager at a well-known pizza hut. I was trusted with many

various duties and this enriching experience taught me a lot about management. I also

identified my weaknesses and gaps in my practical implementation of management and what

knowledge I had acquired earlier.

My education taught me about different HR duties and building a suitable work culture. I was

able to resolve any conflicts between staff members and cultivate a healthy workplace

environment. I was able to manage inventory levels and balance the cash register to ensure

transparency. This helped me keep an accurate check and balance on all the cash flows; I was

able to report all the expenses and earnings to my supervisors.

I had to manage bookings and stay in contact with customers to obtain their feedback and ensure

that they do not face any trouble during reservations. I had gained knowledge of organization

and planning previously, and it helped me draft shift schedules and keep a detailed track of all

the employees that are coming on or all those who are missing their shifts.

I developed several transferrable skills as the nature of my job encouraged me to interact with

customers and my peer frequently. I now possess leadership skills as I was asked to manage and

supervise the team. I had to take lead on different projects; some of them were fairly challenging

and motivated my team. I also developed strong communication and relationship-building skills

because of this.
I also gained the ability to pay great attention to detail and become more attentive. I would

evaluate the projects and the results precisely and identify any discrepancy, like say in the

payments or earnings. I also improved my IT and computer skills as I had to keep a record

of shifts on a software program.

I do have the knowledge about working collaboratively but I didn’t possess skills of teamwork

and team coordination. Initially, I hesitated to interact with the team and collaborate generally

with them. I had difficulty trusting them with my work. I can overcome this with practice and

more experience. I must engage in more group work and group projects, so I learn the

decorum of being a part of the team.

Because of my shortage of experience, I was unable to reason analytically, especially with my

supervisors, however, it was expected of me to be analytical. We are typically not taught

about this, but this skill helps a lot in identifying problems, disintegrating, and then solving

them.

Because of a lack of this skill, I was sometimes unable to identify the root cause of some

problems like inconsistencies in inventory levels and disparities in reported figures. I can acquire

this skill by reading more and playing brain games that instill logical reasoning.

I gained a lot from my experience working as a shift manager. Reading about management and

being a part of it are very different. I acquired a lot of leadership skills and became more aware

of professionalism in the workplace. It definitely refined my skills and prepared me for my

career advancements.
