Activity Description Time/Material

Hello everybody. My name is Alisa. Those who attended our last meeting probably 2
remember our only rule. How do you think what is it? Speak English! – you can write
it on the board or print it out on a colour paper and hang PPP
And today we are going to talk about…
Show the PPP and let students guess
American Culture!
Get to know I want to divide you into pairs. You’ll get half of an expression and you need to find 3+2
your partner who has another half.
Divide into pairs cards
In pairs now you have 2 minutes two fill the diagrams. You need to find two things
that you have in common and two things that you don’t share. Diagrams lists
For example:….. (teachers show example)

Ready, steady, go!

Get to know Ok, now that you’ve completed the diagrams I‘d like you to introduce your partner. 10
One person from each pair needs to say 1 thing that you have in common and then
two facts about his partner.

For example:…… (teachers show example)

Lead-in to first Ok, now that we know each other we can get straight to business! Plan with pics
part So, we’ll talk about American culture. And that is our awesome plan for today! – hang
on the board and tick completed tasks as they are being done during the meeting 5 min

How do you think what does each picture represent? Guess, what will we do? – don’t
tell the answer right away, keep a little mystery
I decided that we need to start on a fun note. In America they have some common 10+5
types of jokes. All of them have one feature that is repeated in every joke. And I want
to tell you about the most famous of them. Colourful paper for students+markers
Write on board:
Knock-knock jokes
Show the example on the screen. Good knock-knock joke (Obama and Putin joke)
- Knock-knock jokes have the same beginning….. elicit the structure from
students (knock-knock, who is it?, answer, answer + who?, punch line – Homophone charts
t[plain what it is). Explain that these jokes are built around similar sounds.
We call words that sound the same or similar homophones. Give 2-3
examples, ask students to come up with their own (possible: make a quick Find some more funny One simply does not memes
competition on who writes the most)
As a result you should have a scheme on board that will allow students to make their
own jokes following your example

Provide them with homophone charts and set timer for 5 minutes. Now they have to
create a joke on their own.

- I will divide you into groups of three. It’s gonna be simple. Just count 1-2-3 one
by one. And remember your number! You have 5 minutes to try and write your
own knock-knock joke.
Teachers should help the groups and monitor that they speak ONLY English.

Another fun cultural thing is memes. Do you know what memes are? Explain to me
in English.
Discuss memes. What memes do they know? What characters are on those memes?
In what situations do we use them?

Show a plain One does not simply meme. Ask what movie it’s from and who is the
character if you haven’t discussed it yet. What he says in Russian (or in Eng if they
know). Show one example with words written. Let students elicit what phrase is
always on this meme.
Show more examples.

In the same groups they now have 5 mins to create their own meme. You can print
out plain meme and let them write on it or ask them to draw it schematically on their
own.

Another cultural particularity that we will talk about today is about school life. Pics to represent the clubs
Schools in America have a lot of clubs. All pupils usually join some sort of a club.
It can be as simple as a chess club (show pics on the projector) or a ski club. Or it can
be something as rare and interesting as Series or Cartoon club. Or Emo or Rap Club.
Drama Club, Board Games Club.
So the idea of the club is that people who have the same hobbies or interests get
together on some regular bases and do activities that they enjoy, meet up to have
fun together and so on.

We here created our Teachers club. So that everybody will know that teachers are
cool. And here is our advert. Let’s elicit some of the key elements that Clubs have.
Students should tell you the structure, you just navigate them. Possible: divide into
small groups and let them to think about the structure on their wn for 2-3 minutes.

- Name Teachers Club advert on the projector

- Logo
- Moto
- Regular time and place to meet
- Special activities that they do every week/every month Structure written on the board
- Goal that reflects common interests
- Leader (contact info to join)

Let’s imagine we’ve got an opportunity to create our own club. What type of club can 7 min to present and elicit the structure + 10-15
we open? min to create (на деле получится 15, так что сразу
- Elicit ideas from students. Write all the ideas on the board. заложу 15)
-
Now let’s get into three groups. Pizza cards – everybody gets a slice of pizza. They Pizza cards
need to unite according to the type of pizza.

In your groups you will have 10 minutes to create your own club and write an advert
to attract and invite other students.
Now you get the cards. Please seat together with your group and start working!
BREAK 5-7 min Total part one – 65 min BREAK 5-7 min
BREAK 5-7 min
Presentation Now you are going to present your adverts. You will have three minutes to make 5+5+5+5 to choose
your presentation and each team is allowed to ask 1-2 questions after the
presentation.
Teachers here are going to decide what club they want to join. After all the Stickers for teachers
presentations they will tell us which club meetings they’d like to attend and why.

One teacher has one sticker. They stick it to the best advert (all the adults
participate)
Let us figure out the last point on our agenda today.
Have you ever heard an expression American Dream? What is it all about? 10-15+15
- Listen to the students, correct, add smth if needed

What people who accomplished this American dream do we know?

- Listen to the answers, add if needed (Ford, Jobs, Harley-Davidson, etc) –
write on board. P.S. read some info about them , so that you have smth to
tell to your students. Or better: find an interesting short video explaining
what American dream is

Now, all the names that we wrote here symbolize something today. I will show you
some pictures, you will tell me what you see.
And then I’d like you to tell me what is behind each of these names.
Presentation with brands
On screen – images of famous brands - PPP.
So the students need to get to understanding that there is a brand behind each Cards with topics for brands
name.
And the brands are different – food, technology items, clothes, etc.

Let’s take a closer look at one of the brands and study Coca-Cola web page.
On screen – printscreen of Coca-Cola web-page (I’ll upload the printscreen a bit later,
maybe change it to another brand. Want to find the perfect one) . Let’s see what
every brand has.
Elicit from students (write on board):
- Name
- Logo
- Moto (which may change from time to time. Give examples of old and new
mottos of Cola, McDonalds and Nike)
- Mission (probably will need to show several missions of different companies)
- Values (what good do they do to the world)
- Particularities (what makes the company so special and different from its
rivals)
Now your lucky guess – how do you think, what will we do next today? Create our
own brand!

Here are the markets (show cards) that you are going to work at. We will divide you
into three groups and give you 15 minutes to create your brand and write down each
of the points from the board (logo, motto, etc.).

Markets/what they need to create:

Application
Smartphone
Fast food
Clothes and accessories
Cars
Sweets
Drinks

P.S. I suggest that you choose 3 topics and write them on cards. So that you can
divide them this way right away. We choose application, drinks and sweets and it
worked out very good. You can choose something else.
When you have your idea written and you want to implement it you are going to
need money. To open a start-up you need to attract investors. 15+20 min
Today all of us, teachers, are going to be investors and choose one project to give
their money to. Ipods, iphones, ipads

How do you usually promote products or services? – using commercials

Before talking seriously I want to show you some of the best and funniest
commercials. Let’s discuss what is special about each of them. – show funny com
video

And now this is a classic example of TV commercial – show the video

Let’s elicit the structure. What should a good commercial have?
- Characters that catch attention, stand out somehow
- Story line
- Motto at the end
- Product picture/real product itself
- Price (optional)
You can rephrase all of these points the way children will say them at the lesson, so
that it’s simple and easy for them to understand what is behind each point.

One of the investors (give some attribute to distinguish):

Hello, guys! Great to see you! Before you start I’d like to give you some tips.. you see,
I’m a professional (play the role, make it fun) and I know how to get these kind of
things done. And I am even kind enough to share some tips and give you advice
today.
1) Use simple language
2) Pronounce all the words clearly
3) The more you illustrate what you are saying with gestures, pictures or
whatever the better
Now I wish you luck and I hope that 2000000 dollars that we as investors have right
now will be put into goooood projects!

Give 5 mins to discuss the commercial, what they are going to film and how and 10
mins to actually film it. Important: film it as one piece, don’t brake into small scenes
cause there will be no time to edit.

Each group should have a teacher as a guide and also some place where they can film
(hall, the classroom, another classroom. Give them a bit of space)
BREAK 5 min BREAK 5 min BREAK 5 min
Presentations Upload all the videos during the break and then show them on the screen. After each 15 min for three groups
commercial investors and other groups can ask questions (set the time limit for Qs
about 2-3 mins).
Game While the investors are deciding which brand deserves to get investment, we are 5 min
going to play a little game.
We will give you some riddles. The first person to raise his/her hand and answer it Stickers
correctly will get a sticker.
List of riddles
Feedback from investors and their final decision 5 min
Thank you everybody very much! Congratulations to our winners! 10 min
….

Now we would like you to fill in our small questionnaire about the meeting. Questionnaire
Maybe also: on board there are stars with numbers. Under each number there is a
question. One person chooses a number and answers the question. For example: Questions for ending the meeting
