Motor physics: Course of motor current

The direct starting current

The direct starting current of the motor is
between 3 and 15 times of the value of the
I rated operational current depending on the
Istart motor type. As a typical value the seven to
~
~7 x Irated eightfold value of the motor rated current
can be taken. That means that the supply
system must be dimensioned for this higher
performance during the motor start, e.g. with
the help of a larger network transformer for
Irated the main voltage.

Motor physics: torque

The torque
The start torque and the run-down torque
Motor-Torque M=f(n) can usually be accepted between two and
four times more than the rated –load torque.
For the load machine, this means, that

How does a Soft Starter work?

Soft Starters are designed to start Squirrel Cage

Asynchronous Motors

The Soft Starter controls (increases) the motor-voltage

during the start of the motor by using thyristors, similar
to a dimmer.

The torque and the current of the motor during the start
are related to motor voltage.

! Reduced motor voltage at the start means:

Reduced motor torque (softer start, less wearing)
Reduced starting current (less impact on supplying net)

Operation without bridged thyristors:

With rated load, the motor has a current
of approx. 100 A. The power loss via the
controlled thyristors would be approx.
3W/A.

Page 17 2018-03-08
Torque control vs. voltage ramp

• The voltage ramp is the

standard starting mode of soft
starters.
• The torque control improves
the start-up, especially in close
proximity to the stall torque.
• Generally both start modes are
comparable and can be used
similarly.

Page 18 2018-03-08
Torque control vs. voltage ramp

• The measurable advantages of

the torque control lie in the soft
stop, especially the soft pump
stop.
• With the voltage ramp, the
torque collapses comparatively
quickly. Due to the high load
change, this may result in e.g.
“water hammer” in pumps
• This can be prevented using
torque control.

Unrestricted © Siemens AG 2018

Page 19 2018-03-08
Torque control vs. voltage ramp
Summary

Starting
During the start, both methods are good and ready to use.
The acceleration up to rated speed (tipping point) with
torque control is a little bit more constant and smooth, but both starting methods
are good.

Stopping
The big advantages of torque control you will find with soft stop,
especially with the pump stop function, preventing water hammer in pump
applications. The performance of a “regular soft stop ” for critical applications
i.e. voltage ramp (e.g. with 3RW40) is not as good as with 3RW44 torque
control.

„Polarity Balancing“ in two-phase-controlled
Soft Starters 3RW30 and 3RW40

The Advantages
• Eliminates the DC components that are physically caused
in two-phase controlled soft starters.

• Prevents the otherwise generated brake moments.

• Makes it possible to soft start a motor by only controlling two phases, especially in the
higher power ranges (patented and globally unique).

• Ensures a steady motor start-up.

... is the base for the small and

compact design of 3RW30 and 3RW40.

“Polarity balancing” does not affect current
imbalance caused by 2-phase control

During start-up, the

current level differs
per phase, since
the current in the
uncontrolled phase
is a result of the
addition of the
currents in the two
controlled phases.
Typically, the
imbalance during
start-up can be
58A approx. 30-40%.
