Instruction(s): Attempt all questions. Questions carry marks as indicated.

Question 2 (12 Marks)

a. What are the major functions of roads? 2 marks
 Accessibility- linking roads to land use functions such as work, leisure, trading,
social services, etc. (1 mark)
 Mobility- through movement of goods and people (1 mark)

b. Write short notes on the Uganda road classes according to functional classification 10
marks
 Class A- International trunk roads-
Link national roads to those of neighbouring countries, for mobility.
 Class B- National roads-
Linking provincial capitals/major cities, main centres of population and nationally
important centres, mainly for mobility

 Class C- Primary roads-

Link districts local centres of population and development areas with higher class
road. For mobility and access

 Class D- Secondary roads

Link locally important centres (rural/market centres) to each other, to a more
important centres, or to a higher class roads. For mobility and access

 Class E- Minor roads-

Provide access to land adjacent to the secondary road system.

Question 1 (20 Marks)

a. Define the following terms and state three examples for each. 5 marks
i. Interrupted flow facilities- facilities on which traffic flow is influenced by external
interruptions. Examples:
At-grade junctions, urban streets with on-street parking, driveways/accesses from roads to land uses
functions. (2.5 marks)

ii. Un-interrupted flow facilities- facilities with hardly/limited control external facilities to
traffic
flow. Examples: Motorways/freeways, national roads in Uganda, road links between junctions,
Nothernby pass in Uganda- intended for heavy goods vehicles. (2.5 marks)

b. The following counts were taken at an intersection approach during the morning peak hour period.
Determine the hourly volume, peak rate of flow and peak hour factor (PHF). 6 marks

-Hourly volume = sum of volumes over the period 8:00am – 9:00am = 630 veh/hr (1 mark)
-Peak rate of flow = highest rate of flow = 660 veh/hr in 8:30-8:45 am period. (1 mark)
Peak hour factor (PHF):
(2 marks)

c. Two sets of vehicles are timed over a km and flows are recorded. In the first set, vehicles take 52,
56, 63 and 69 seconds when flow is 1500 veh/hr. In the second set, vehicles take 70, 74, 77, 79
seconds when flow is 1920 veh/hr. Determine the speed and density. 9 marks
Speed
 1st set of vehicles:

(2 marks)

 2nd set of vehicles:

Overall speed: (1 mark)

Density ( 4marks)
