Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a design

process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or
imaginative solutions. Students:
a) know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing
theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

Objectives By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the main idea of our
story and how a community works together to create a family, when asked to at
100% accuracy.

Differentiation All of the learners in this classroom have special needs, as this is a self-
Strategies contained classroom. The whole lesson is differentiated to their needs and level
of abilities. In this class I have one English Language Learner student. I will
provide them with a vocabulary cheat sheet to assist in the lesson. I will include
the translation of the vocabulary terms we are using today: family, quilt, explain
and identify. This cheat sheet will ensure their understanding of our vocabulary
terms presented in the lesson.

E Description

Engagement I will begin the lesson by explaining to my students that we are going to be
reading the book “Stitchin’ and Pullin’: A Gee’s Bend Quilt” by Patricia McKissick
today. Prior to the lesson beginning, I will have written the vocabulary words and
their definitions on the board at the front of the classroom.
Vocabulary words:
Explain: to make an idea clear
Identify: to establish what something is
Family: a group of people, who may be related to one another by blood or
marriage, but who are drawn to one another by a shared love
Quilt: a knitted or fabric bedspread with decorative stitching
On the board I will also include two leading statements that we can refer back to
as a class to understand what we are looking for in this lesson.
1. A family can be explained by _________.
2. I am able to identify a quilt by ________.
3. The main idea of this story is that _____.
Before we read our story, we will discuss what it means to be in a family and
how a family works together. I will write these suggestions on the board for the
class to see. We will also discuss what a quilt is, allowing me to guage their
understanding of: how quilts are made, what materials are needed and what
quilts are used for. As a whole group, we will then watch the following video of
the book being read aloud.

Engagement To ensure my students are engaged in the lesson, my paraprofessional or I will

Assessment be sitting with our students for the lesson. This allows us to monitor attention and
behavior, allowing us to correct as needed. I will be checking my students
understanding of the book and the process of quilt making by asking leading
questions. My students will be able to openly discuss their understanding or ask
clarifying questions in a non-judgemental format, we are accustomed to whole
group discussions in this class.

Exploration
I will discuss the new vocabulary terms and discuss the leading statements
written on the board. I will model how to use the statements to deepen the
understanding of how to work together to create a family in a community and
how to make a quilt. We will then watch the video on how to create a quilt
square, to allow them to get a full understanding of what we will be creating
today.

I will then discuss examples of how different groups or communities of people

work together to create a family. I will model for them how to create a quilt
square using the pre-cut felt squares. As a class, we will create the greatest
example of a community by working together as a family to create a quilt. I will
check to see if anyone has any questions before breaking into our usual small
groups to work on creating our individual quilt squares. Once in our small
groups, my paraprofessional and I will assist the students with creating their own
personal quilt square. While we are in our small groups we will continue
discussion on the importance of families, communities and working together.

Exploration To ensure my students understand the concepts being presented, we will ask
Assessment leading questions as we work on our quilt squares. This allows my
paraprofessional and I to answer any questions our students have and to ensure
they comprehend the vocabulary terms being presented. This also allows us to
verify they understand the main idea of the story that was read in our whole
group session.

Explanation One of the most important things I want my students to take from this lesson is
that although we each have families that look different, they are each important
to our story. The main idea in the book “Stitchin’ and Pullin’: A Gee’s Bend Quilt”
is that a family or community is made up of all shapes and sizes. A true family
can work together to create beautiful, useful items. I want my students to walk
away realizing that in our classroom we are a family, that each day we create
beautiful things together. We will watch the video “Different Kinds of Families” to
further discuss the unique types of families.

We will discuss as a whole group or vocabulary words for today’s lesson, as they
may be new terms for some of the students.
Explain: to make an idea clear
Identify: to establish what something is
Family: a group of people, who may be related to one another by blood or
marriage, but who are drawn to one another by a shared love
Quilt: a knitted or fabric bedspread with decorative stitching
As previously stated, I will write 3 leading questions on the board at the front of
the classroom. These 3 questions allow me the opportunity to refer back to the
questions throughout the lesson, especially as I explain the details I want my
students to take away from the lesson.
1. A family can be explained by _________.
2. I am able to identify a quilt by ________.

3. The main idea of this story is that _____.

Explanation Include another formative assessment in this section.

Assessment

Elaboration For the technology activity in our lesson, my students will work together in their
small groups to create an infographic on Canva.com. My students are familiar
with using Canva.com to create infographics so this should be easy and fun for
them. (I will assist one small group and my paraprofessional will be assisting the
other small group) Each group can choose to create their infographic on: family/
family structures or on how quilts are made in Gee’s Bend. At the completion of
their infographics, each team will email a pdf to me so that I can grade their work
against the checklist created for their grading. I will provide an example of what I
am looking for on the Smartboard, as well as a copy of the checklist of must
have items.

Evaluation The summative assessment for this lesson will be completion of an infographic
on Canva.com by each group. Each group will email their assignment to me at
vcaddell@mcpss.com. Once received, I will use the Infographic Checklist to
verify each groups score for this assignment.

Infographic Checklist:

_______Title for your Infographic

_______Group members names listed

_______2 or more photos inserted

_______1 or more vocabulary term defined

_______Creative/ Colorful presentation
