When your food needs to be safe
So do your motors

In the dry and wet areas of a food processing plant, standard and traditional
washdown motors are sufficient. But in the food zone, where equipment
comes in direct contact with food, your equipment must withstand high
pressure, sanitary cleaning methods. Using the wrong equipment in the food
zone can lead to bacterial growth, inspection failures, fines and downtime.

Baldor-Reliance® Food Safe motors were designed with the food zone in mind.
To keep you, and your food, safe.

Sanitary/Hygienic Construction
The largest concern from manufacturers in this industry is
material safety. Ensuring a pump meets food safe practices
is paramount in deciding on the right pump for the process.
Ensuring components do not introduce pathogens, degrade
ingredients and can be cleaned are critically important. The
pump component that will come into contact most frequently on
this pump is the hose. Ensure the pump manufacturer is using
hoses that meet government regulations such as U.S. Food &
Drug Administration (FDA) and European Commission (EC) 1935.
The pump barbs (or connectors) should be made of sanitary
material such as stainless steel and should be easily cleaned.
Peristaltic pumps are a reliable technology but some failures
do occur, usually at the hose. If a hose fails, the food, beverage,
personal care or cosmetic ingredient will come into contact with
the lubricant in the pump housing, and the lubricant could be
introduced to the rest of the process. Ensure the lubricant used

Spec & Build a Peristaltic Pump

The first thing to do when building out a peristaltic pump for an
application is to determine the chemical compatibility. Check
the compatibility of the hose and lubricant against both the
pumped media and any cleaning solutions used. Next, select the
hose and motor/gearbox size to deliver the required flow rates.
Make sure the hose inside diameter is larger than the largest
particulate to prevent clogging. Following these steps will ensure
long hose life and optimal performance.

today’s automated technology makes
better precision and efficiency possible, one
drawback is that electronics are susceptible
to power quality issues.
Automation in manufacturing has

Methods of Determining Accuracy Check 113 on index.
There are many methods of calculating
accuracy statements for pressure
instruments but not all of them result in
accurate accuracy statements. An accuracy
statement should include a summation of
the error sources but this is uncommon in
the HVAC industry. At a minimum, accuracy
statements should include nonlinearity,
hysteresis, nonrepeatability, zero offset and
span setting, which contribute to how the
instrument performs.
While not all summation methods
consider all of these errors, using the
terminal point method does by including
both the zero and span offsets as part of
the accuracy statement. This methodology
determines the actual error for a pressure
instrument, allowing manufacturers
to better indicate the accuracy of their
products and contractors to better manage
the heating, cooling and subsequent low
airflow in their HVAC systems.
Why is accuracy important? Energy
efficiency equals cost savings.

vibration levels. ANSI/HI 9.6.4 currently does not take into
account engine operation factors. Misapplication of the motor
vibration levels within ANSI/HI 9.6.4 will often lead one to believe
that a normal, healthy engine-driven system has a vibration
problem. There are some standards, such as International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) machinery standards,
that provide some guidelines regarding acceptable engine
vibration levels.
The Hydraulic Institute would like to expand ANSI/HI
9.6.4 to include pumps driven by reciprocating engines and
is conducting a field vibration data gathering campaign to
obtain useful operational information about engine-driven
pump applications. To participate in the program or assist with
providing field data, please contact hitechnical@pumps.org. O

Q| In which applications are metering pumps used?

:
Metering pumps (also known as controlled volume pumps,
chemical injection/feed pumps, or dosing pumps) are typically Check 120 on index.
used for the injection of chemical additives, proportional
blending of multiple components or metered transfer of a single
liquid. These types of pumps are used in applications requiring
highly accurate, repeatable and adjustable rates of flow.
Like the vast majority of pump types, ultimate performance
is determined by not only correctly specifying the type and size
of the pump but also by the design of the suction and discharge
piping. This is particularly important for metering pumps
because they have a characteristic pulsating output due to their
reciprocating action. The rate of flow of a controlled-volume

π
pump is a function of the cross-sectional area of the plunger or
piston or displacement of the diaphragm, the stroke length and
the strokes per minute. The rate of flow is adjusted by changing
the stroke length and/or the stroking speed.
Metering pumps are characterized by their ability to meet B
specific performance requirements concerning steady state
accuracy, turn down ratio, repeatability and linearity.
For more information on metering pumps and their piping
design refer to ANSI/HI 7.8 “Controlled Volume Metering Pump
Piping Guideline” at pumps.org.

Technology is available today that allows for the analysis of existing diffuser designs and to provide
solutions in the event of a catastrophic failure. The discussion during this webinar will focus on
diffusers, their failure modes and the parameters that need to be addressed when retrofitting a
diffuser pump with a new diffuser set. Learn more through a case study that will also be presented.
