LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Recognizing Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies and Skills need in EIM (Week 8)

Objectives:

At the end of the session, the learners will be able to:

1. identify entrepreneurial competencies related to EIM;

2. compare one’s PECS with those of a practitioner entrepreneur; and
3. appreciate the importance of knowing and improving one’s PECS.

Introduction:
Entrepreneurs are those with the skills and capabilities to see and evaluate business
opportunities and can strategically identify products or services needed by the community, also
they have the capacity to deliver those products or services at the right time and place.
Entrepreneurship is not just a simple business activity but a strategic process of innovation in
either product or services. It is the art and science of converting business ideas into marketable
products or services and ultimately, to improve quality of life.
Competencies are the combination of knowledge, abilities, and attitudes needed to
accomplish a task or role effectively and efficiently. Entrepreneurial competencies refer to the
important features that should be possessed by an entrepreneur to perform entrepreneurial
functions successfully. Therefore, Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies are the key
characteristics that one should possess to become a successful entrepreneur.
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies and Skills are divided into three categories namely (1)
achievement cluster, (2) planning cluster, and (3) power cluster.

1. Achievement Cluster - entrepreneurs are considered as achievers if they do not stop unless
they reached what they wanted. This type of individual possesses the following competencies and
skills.
• Opportunity seeking - the ability to quickly spot and identify possible business.
• Persistence - making repeated efforts or taking different actions despite obstacles and
failed attempts to be successful.
• Commitment to work - placing a high regard to work or job such as making personal
sacrifice or extending effort and time to complete a job.
• Demand for quality and efficiency - characteristic of an entrepreneur to set standards
for quality products or services to meet the customer’s satisfaction.
• Risk-taking - ability of assessing the hazards and perils of business situations and
calculating the chances of success and profits.

2. Planning Cluster - those who gather information, implement, and evaluate plans to carry out
objectives. Goal-oriented individuals are most likely to perform the following functions:
• Goal setting - setting SMART objectives and putting the heart on something to achieve it.

1
• Information seeking - acting on how to seek information to help business and use the
information in making an informed decision.
• Systematic planning and monitoring - developing and using logical, step-by-step plans
to reach goals

3. Power Cluster – those who possess confidence, convincing power, and ability to persuade
others. Entrepreneurs under this cluster have the following characteristics:
• Persuasion and networking - persuasion is the ability to influence others to do
something such as buying a product or investing in a business, while networking refers to
the ability of socializing and developing strong connections with other people and
institutions.
• Self-confidence - having a strong belief in self and own abilities.
