The B.M.X. (Bicycle Motor Cross) is a bike designed and built for specific purposes. The bike is
generally made of steel so that it is strong and will not bend under the enormous stress that it is
subjected to when being ridden. Some bikes, designed especially for B.M.X. racing, are made of
aluminium because it is lighter.
The main difference between B.M.X. and other bikes is the undersized frame which allows
maximum maneuverability. The wheels are also small, with wide tires. Most have a gyro system of
bearings and pulleys that allows the large, curved handlebars to spin 360 degrees. This enables the
rider to perform daredevil stunts and tricks. The saddle is low and not padded for comfort because the
bike is often ridden by standing on the pedals or on strong, steel stunt pegs that are found on either
side of the front and back wheels.
Some bikers ride up and down slopes that look like larger versions of skateboard ramps,
executing difficult jumps and spins at both ends. Others perform their tricks on flat ground, balancing
on small areas of the bike itself. There are now a number of separate areas where the bikes can be
ridden safely away from cars and pedestrians.

III. ESSAY

45. Read the following text then decide whether the sentences below are true or false!

A bilingual education provides two languages to students simultaneously. This

happens at both university and primary to secondary school level. Most programs are
structured to teach in English during one part of the lesson, then the Indonesian for the other
portion of the lesson. Is this a beneficial educational structure? Here are some pros and cons
to discuss.
For some people who agree with bilingual education, they believe that dual languages
for a medium of instruction at school is necessary as a response to globalization. The lack of
international language competency can hinder many Indonesians from fully participating in the
globalization. Using English with Indonesian can assist learners to be part of the global
community of English. Academically, the addition of English as a medium of instruction can
trigger learners to master content from English sources, which would then improve their
mastery of subjects. The improvement of mastery can lead to the higher academic
achievement of students. Learners in bilingual programs can also gain new literacy skills.
These new literacy and technological skills cannot be learnt without mastering English as an
international language.
On the other hand, those who disagree with the use of bilingual at school or university,
say that English can be a threat to local and national languages. Learners will appreciate
foreign languages more than the national and the local languages because of practical
reasons. The other challenge is that the exposure of English in the Indonesian education
system is still limited compared to other neighbouring countries. As a result, the use of English
alongside Indonesian may only benefit ‘elite society’ because learners from high socio-
economic backgrounds have much better preparation than those who aren’t.
In conclusion, bilingual education policy can be an appropriate option for Indonesian
schools or universities because students can maintain their local and national identities on one
hand, and learn other cultures and languages on the other.

11
Decide whether these sentences are true or false
a) Bilingual education can be applied from elementary to higher level of education. (TRUE)
b) There are more schools use bilingual compared to universities. (FALSE)
c) Bilingual education allows students to choose their second language. (FALSE)
d) Globalization is the sole reason for using English for medium of instruction at school. (FALSE)
e) Using English may help Indonesian students to participate in global communication. (TRUE)
f) English has made the local language disappeared. (FALSE)
g) Indonesia is still inferior in English exposure compared to other south-east Asian countries.
