The Ideal Entrepreneur

Did you know that SM City North EDSA is the largest mall in the Philippines. Most of the SM
malls were owned and developed by the late Henry Sy.
Henry Sy was a very successful entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is the person who produces
products and offers services to satisfies the needs and demands of the people in order to earn
profit. The owners of the sari-sari store, meat shop and vegetables in your community are called
entrepreneurs.

What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? Here are some of the qualities of an ideal
entrepreneur cited in the Life Skills TLE Book for Grade VI adapted from the Entrepreneur’s
Handbook by Canadian International Development Agency-Private Enterprise Accelerated
Resources Linkages ( CIDA-PEARL) and Philippine Small and Medium Business Development
Foundation ( PHILSMED )

Types of Entrepreneurs
There are different types of entrepreneurs according to Christine Miller in the Resourceful
Entrepreneur. They are categorized into four general types. (Life Skill Book TLE VI pp 5-6).

1. The Social Entrepreneur - This type of entrepreneur offers products and services with the
overall intention of creating social good. Example: Henry Motte-Munoz. He founded
EdukasyonPH, a platfoform that connects students to educational opportunities like scholarship.
2. The Serial Entrepreneur - This type pf entrepreneur would set up businesses and bring them
to a stage of development. The business is the sold or handed to a successor or group of
successors. Example. SM malls were managed by the heir of Mr. Sy after he died.
3. The Lifestyle Entrepreneur - This type of entrepreneur would choose a business that would
reflect their passion simply such as a hobby or favorite sports rather than pursuing profit.
Example. Chef of his own restaurant.
4. The Solopreneur - This type of entrepreneur operates alone and manages all aspects of the
business made possible with the use of ICT tools. ICT tools make multitasking easier. Example:
owner of sari-sari store.
The Seller and the Buyer
For instance, you were told by your mother to buy eggs in a store and the owner sold the
eggs for you. Who is the seller? Yes, the owner of the store. Seller is the one who meets the
needs and demands of the buyer with corresponding an amount of money. He/she offers goods,
products and services for a certain amount to earn a profit. Buyer is the person who buys the
products or services to satisfy his/her needs. The buyer is also called consumer and end-user.
The seller can also be a buyer. He/she buys products at a certain price from the supplier. The
money he spends to buy a product is the actual cost. The amount of money added to the actual
cost of the good is what you call the profit. Actual cost plus the money added is the selling
price. Both the seller and the buyer must be sensitive to the quality and right price of the
products and services.

community quarantine, entrepreneurs made innovative solutions to keep their businesses survive even
in difficult times. The most popular form of business is the online selling and door to door delivery of
products.
They are part of what we call new normal. Most of the products being sold are foods and health-
concern products like mask, face shield, alcohol, and gloves. At your age, you can try to be a good
entrepreneur by producing products and let your family members sell them through online, too. With your
creativity, resourcefulness, skills and with the guidance of your family members you can make a good
plan on how you can produce simple things to sell. Follow the plan carefully and do it with love. All you
need is patience , endurance, resourcefulness and creativity to make your products at its best quality.
To ensure that the products will be sold, consider the following:
1. Check what product is in demand in your community. What most of the people buy?
You can make a survey. If there are too many of what you like to sell, you can innovate your product.
2. Check the location of your business. It must be near to your prospect buyers.
3. Do you have enough knowledge and skill in producing that product?
4. Do you have enough budget or capital or money to sustain the needs of your business?
5. Is your product attractive or appealing or presentable to the eyes of your customers?
6. Are all your materials, utensils and tools needed are available in your home?
