1 Introduction

1.1 This standard is prepared in order to standardise 2D drawing practices for all PII
functions within BT Derby.
1.2 This document is prepared based on the best practices being followed by the
different functions within PII.
1.3 Technical Product Documentation and Specification Standard – BS 8888:2013 & EN
15016-1, should be adhered to, in conjuction with the specific preferences,
highlighted in this document.
1.4 This standard applies, specifically, to the use of CATIA V5.
1.5 A Checklist for 2D Drawings (Document 013332.xls) must be completed for each
drawing.

Drawing Sheet

2.1 Standard Size A1 Drawing Frame to be used. (Drawings will be printed at A3 size).
2.2 If creating a new drawing in VPM, use “Startup” as the source which will default to an
A3 ISO drawing area. This should be changed to “CDT CDS A1 Landscape or
Portrait” depeding upon the requirements. If the item being drawn would benefit from
a smaller drawing area then sizes A2 and A3 can be used.
2.3 Default Font – CATIA SYMBOLS (TrueType)
2.4 Default Text Size – 3.5mm (Dimension text, notes)
2.5 Drawing to be created using compound documents, through PDM. (unless specified
otherwise by the customer).
2.6 Extended data to be used to generate standard notes.
2.7 Text to be written in “Sentence case”

Scales

3.1 Standard recommended scales are – 20:1, 10:1, 5:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:10,
1:20 and 1:50.
3.2 It is recommended that the scales above are used wherever possible and practical.
However, with the advent of CAD systems and the ability to view drawings
electronically at any size, the importance of using a standard range of scales has
diminished. Where the recommended scales cannot be applied, intermediate scales
may be selected.
3.3 Views to be shown as large as practical, to facilitate better viewing at A3 size.
3.4 Scale should not be quoted on drawing views.

Confidential and proprietary.

Views

4.1 All views are to be First Angle Projection.

4.2 The number of views shall be limited to the minimum necessary required to fully
detail the part, without ambiguity.
4.3 Avoid hidden detail in any view, unless it is absolutely necessary.
4.4 The unnecessary repitition of a detail shall be avoided.
4.5 View names are to be positioned underneath the view.
4.6 Add 3D views, to help clarify the information.
4.7 Unnecessary detail should be removed / hidden from views, if not adding to the value
of the drawing.

Section Views

5.1 Section Views are to be presented, as specified in BS ISO 128-44, with the exception
of the view name location. All view name locations, including section view names, are
to be placed below the view.

Lines

The following standard CATIA V5 line types and thickness should be used –
6.1 CONTOUR / OUTLINE lines should be LINE TYPE 1 and with a thickness of 0.5mm.
6.2 REFERENCE / OUTLINE OF ADJACENT PARTS lines should be LINE TYPE 5 and
with a thickness of 0.18mm.
6.3 HIDDEN lines should be LINE TYPE 3 and with a thickness of 0.25mm.
6.4 CENTRE lines should be LINE TYPE 4 and with a thickness of 0.25mm.
6.5 BEND lines should be LINE TYPE 1 and with a thickness of 0.25mm.
6.6 Circles defining the area of a BLOW UP VIEW should be LINE TYPE 1 and with a
thickness of 0.25mm.
6.7 The edges of BROKEN VIEWS should be LINE TYPE 8, with a thickness of 0.18mm.
However, on smaller views it is sometimes more practical to use LINE TYPE 1 with a
thickness of 0.18mm.
6.8 The colour of all lines shall be black.
6.9 Screw threads to be shown with the correct representation, as described in
ISO 128-24.

Confidential and proprietary.

Text

The following standard CATIA V5 text fonts should be used – (sizes refer to A1 size drawing
frame only)
7.1 GENERAL TEXT – Font type – CATIA SYMBOLS (TrueType) – Size -3.5mm – Style
– REGULAR.
7.2 WELDING SYMBOLS and GD&T – Font type – CATIA SYMBOLS (TrueType) – Size
– 3.5mm – Style – REGULAR.
7.3 VIEW SCALES and ROTATION ANGLES – Font type – CATIA SYMBOLS
(TrueType) – Size – 5mm – Style – REGULAR.
7.4 VIEW NAME– Font type – CATIA SYMBOLS (TrueType) – Size – 7mm – Style –
REGULAR.
7.5 ITEM NUMBERS / BALLOONING – Font Type – CATIA SYMBOLS (True Type) –
Size – 5mm – Style – REGULAR.
7.6 Text sizes should be adjusted, appropriately, for any other size drawing frames used.

Dimensions

8.1 Font type for dimensions shall be CATIA SYMBOLS (TrueType).

8.2 Default Dimension Text Size – 3.5mm.
8.3 Dimension Lines shall be coloured BLACK and with a thickness of 0.25mm.
8.4 Fake Dimensions and non associated dimensions are not permitted.
8.5 Dimension Arrows shall be FILLED ARROWS coloured BLACK with a thickness of
0.35mm.
8.6 All leader lines for holes, notes, etc. shall terminate with a horizontal line.
8.7 A point (.) should be used as the decimal point, not a comma (,).
8.8 Wherever practical, dimensions shall be placed “outside” the view, to avoid obscuring
the view.
8.9 For Sheetmetal parts – Dimension views from one side only.
8.10 Reference Dimensions should be in brackets, i.e. (176.5) rather than 176.5 REF.
8.11 Angles will be dimensioned in Degrees only.
8.12 Prefix for radius dimension shall be “R”.
8.13 Prefix for diameter dimension shall be “Ø”.
8.14 Prefix for thread dimension shall be “M”.
8.15 All dimensions to be in Millimetres (mm).
8.16 Typical dimensions to be represented by of the number of typical dimensions.
Example: 14x Ø4.9

Tolerances

9.1 All engineering drawings should be created to show tolerance information in

accordance with BS 8888:2013 (BS EN ISO 1101) using Geometrical Dimensioning
and Tolerancing, where appropriate for position and fit to a datum.
9.2 Where tolerance information is applied to features of size dimensions, i.e. hole
diameters, shaft diameters etc, they shall conform to BS ISO 129-1 and generally be
of the form:
9.3 +0.25
214 or, where limits are equal 214 ±0.3
-0.15

9.4 The use of general tolerances to BS EN ISO 22768-1. Tolerances for linear and
angular dimensions without individual tolerance indications and  BS EN ISO 22768-2.
Geometrical tolerances for features without individual tolerance indications, is
acceptable.  Use is strictly on the basis that they are only applicable for dimensions
for which no limits are given and should be indicated as such in the drawing notes,
inclusive of the description of the general tolerance grades required.  It should also
be borne in mind that these standards are based around manufacturing processes
that involve metal removal and/or sheetmetal. Application to other manufacturing
processes should only be done following careful consideration.
9.5 The use of other process standards for tolerance, i.e. BS EN 755-9 for extrustions,
BS ISO 3302 for rubber components etc, can be referenced, if considered correct
and applicable.
