MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT

From the advent of the department in 2006, when a conventional management
post-graduate program was delivered, the department has transformed into a
center of learning that thrives on experiential learning.

While governed by the norms of VTU, the department has been exercising its
autonomy since 2015 by revising its curriculum in consultation with professionals
from across the industry and from experts in academia. This way, our students
are exposed to contemporary challenges of global business.

The integration of experiential learning has been a game changer in our student
development endeavour. From curriculum-centric student clubs,
entrepreneurship drives, case study seminars to ‘live’ projects and internships,
we constantly challenge the students to explore the path less traversed in
achieving the ultimate goal of becoming ‘Industry-Ready’ professionals.
Dr. K.G. Hemalatha
Professor & HOD

AN INDUSTRY & ACADEMIA ENDORSED
CURRICULUM

At the Department of Management Studies, DSCE, we take pride in our

curriculum and pedagogy, crafted to incorporate the best-practices. Overseen
by a Board of Studies (BoS) comprising of accomplished technology
professionals from the industry and distinguished academicians from the IIMs
and the IISC, the curriculum is scrutinised every year for relevance and
competitiveness.

Business Analytics made a foray into the department in 2016 as per the
burgeoning needs of the data science industry. 2017 saw the introduction of
Operations Management as a specialisation. Likewise, in 2019, an
experiential course on Digital Marketing was introduced. Similarly, 2020
witnessed the integration of ‘Machine Learning in Business’, a program
specifically curated to meet the industry’s ever growing demands for Artificial

6
STUDENT-INDUSTRY INTERFACE
‘Thought Leadership’ spreads the horizons of a student’s intellect. To this effect, we leverage several
forums and create touch-points for our students to interact with business owners, entrepreneurs and
subject-matter-experts (SMEs) from the industry. Over the past two-years, over forty business leaders
from several corporations have addressed our students on matters ranging from Business Analytics and
Technology Leadership to Data Science and Go-to-market strategy. Central to these efforts are the C.K
Prahalad Lecture Series and The BlacBook Thought Leader Speaker Series. While the former was
developed by the department to serve as a forum for students to interact first-hand with business
leaders, the latter is an initiative spearheaded by the leadership of Dayananda Sagar Institutions (DSI).
We also have the Career Guidance Series which was started to enhance student knowledge about what
kind of opportunities exist for different specializations in the industry.
The integration of environment sustainability into business processes is a critical to the department’s
futuristic vision. Students are encouraged to identify practices employed by companies that align to the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). Further, students interact with these
corporate leaders and report their path-breaking initiatives on AIM2FLOURISH - a program of the Fowler
Center for Business at the Weatherhead School of Management - Case Western Reserve University.

FACULTY-INDUSTRY INTERFACE
Our faculty stays informed of the latest trends in the
marketplace via interactions with industry bodies and experts
at the CII Conclaves, Deloitte Dean's Summit, ET Conclaves
and SAP Labs among others.

Also, our collaborations with NASSCOM and AICTE Training &

Learning (ATAL) Academy ensure that our faculty possess
the right know-how to train students in the areas of Deep
Learning, ML, Design Thinking, Blockchain and a host of
other emerging technological trends.

7
STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS
Integral to the ‘experiential learning’ process, the student internship program lays a
robust platform for the holistic development of our students. This two-phase program
is spread across Semesters III and IV.

After Semester II, students embark on a 10-week organisational study exercise

where the emphasis is on the ‘passive observation’ of business processes as being
undertaken at a business entity. In Semester IV, students execute ‘live’ projects
when interning (with a stipend) at an organisation for a 16-week period in a
specialisation area of their preference.

During both of these efforts, students receive guidance from a designated subject-
matter- expert (SME) at the organisation and in parallel, from a faculty member at the
department. Thereafter, students showcase their work in the form of a report which is
vetted by the in- house faculty and an external academic expert. These programs are
pivotal to the moulding of a student’s character and the fine-tuning of skills in keeping
with the effervescent needs of business.

STUDENT PLACEMENTS
On completion of the Semester IV project, students are in a
position to evaluate job offers in keeping with their area of
specialisation. From start-up’s in the Ed-Tech space and the
growing e-commerce industry, to established players in the
BFSI and technology services domains, our students are
well-equipped to claim a position of strength across a
diverse set of functions.
From humble beginnings, the department has, over the past
five-years, been successful in ensuring that every student
has a job-offer to consider.

In 2019, the department achieved a new high with McAfee

offering a student 12 lakhs per annum for a role in
Customer Relationship Management.
In 2020, the highest package offered was from Byju’s for
10 lakhs per annum.
In 2021, the department’s highest placement package was
with Intel India offering a package of 10.5 Lakhs per
annum.
8
STUDENT TRANSFORMATION
From the time a student enrols into the MBA program at the department, the metamorphosis
begins. With the pedagogy advocating ‘experiential learning’ the students quickly adopts an
approach akin to ‘learn-on-the-job’. And there are plenty of avenues that provide a platform for
students to spread their wings.

From management festivals (Chanakya & Gestione) organised by student clubs to business-
simulation sessions (IPO Festival, Business Hackathon, Ideathon, The Pitch) curated by the
respective academic labs, students explore their hitherto unknown tenets. Further impetus is
provided by DERBI, a state of the art incubation center backed by DSI. Students with an
entrepreneurial acumen can pitch their business ideas to DERBI and seek guidance from its
mentors.

With several avenues on offer, ensuring that a student channelizes ones energies is crucial.
Every student is, therefore, assigned a faculty member who closely monitors the progress of
the designated ward. Called the ‘Proctor program’, this mentor initiative is aimed at the
individual development of students through the course of the MBA tenure.
