Syphilis

Nikoloz Macharashvili’s Paper

 Ways of avoiding syphilis
Syphilis is spread from sexual contact with someone who has it. So the best way to avoid
syphilis and other STDs is to not have anal, oral, or vaginal sex. Knowing how to have safer
sexual intercourse will also help. Using protection really helps to lower your chances of getting
an STD.
 treatment for syphilis
When diagnosed and treated in its early stages, syphilis is easy to cure. The preferred treatment
at all stages is penicillin, an antibiotic medication that can kill the organism that causes syphilis.
If you're allergic to penicillin, your doctor may suggest another antibiotic.
Without treatment, syphilis can cause severe health problems. It can damage the heart, bones,
brain, eyes, muscles and nerves, and it can be fatal. Antibiotics can cure the infection, but
there's no way to repair organs that have been damaged by syphilis.
 Is Syphilis Prevented by any vaccines?
HPV, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B are currently the only three STDs that can be prevented by
vaccines. Other sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, do
not yet have a vaccine. This could be because there is already wide availability of treatments for
infected people (like antibiotics), so vaccines haven't been as much of a priority as they might
be for other diseases not easily treated.
 Syphilis during Pregnancy
If you are pregnant and have syphilis, you can give the infection to your unborn baby. Having syphilis can
lead to a low-birth-weight-baby. It can make it more likely you will deliver your baby too early or
stillborn (a baby born dead). To protect your baby, you should receive syphilis testing at least once
during your pregnancy. Receive treatment right away if you test positive.

At birth, a baby with a syphilis infection may not have signs or symptoms of disease. However, if the
baby does not receive treatment right away, the baby may develop serious problems within a few
weeks. These babies can have health problems, such as cataracts, deafness, or seizures, and can die.
