KÖMÜRCÜOĞLU INTERNATIONAL STONE SCULPTURE COLONY

Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony has been held annually since 2011 and It
is improving each year. 17 Turkish and 37 international (54 in total) sculptors and 3 painters
participated in 6 colonies. Also 5 instructors and 30 students participated to Aegean Stone
Sculpture Academy.

The First Colony was organized between June 13th – July 13th 2011. 8 artists participated in
the Colony; 2 of them were international, 5 Turkish Sculptors and 1 Turkish painter.
The Second Sculpture Colony was carried out between May 1st – May 31st 2012. 10 artists
participated in Colony, 7 international and 2 Turkish sculptors and 1 Turkish painter. In
addition, diplomatic attendance provided by USA and CUBA Ambassadors on the basis of
embassies, Istanbul Consul on behalf of China Embassy, Head of the Culture and Press
Department on behalf of the Japan Embassy. Besides, Italian Ambassador has made a private
visit to the colony.

The Third Colony was held between May 13th – June 13th 2013. Sculptors from 3 different
continents America, Asia and Europe were hosted. The theme of the colony was determined
as “Creating Anatolian originated figurative and abstract sculpture works which complies
with the ancient times”, a theme suitable for purpose of the colony was performed. Also, local
and international sculptors who were invited were selected from artists who are well-known
internationally in order to attract attention to the colony. 10 sculptors and 1 painter
participated in the colony, 7 international, 3 Turkish sculptors and 1 Turkish painter.

The Fourth Colony was organized between May 26th – June 26th 2014. 133 artists applied
(with 195 projects) from Turkey and 37 other countries. 10 sculptors and 1 painter
participated in the colony, 7 of the sculptors were international and 3 of them were Turkish.
Also students were invited from Turkey and other countries for sculpture workshops. The
theme of the 2014 Sculpture Colony was determined as “The stone art which affected Aegean
and Mediterranean civilizations”. In addition, 9 students attended the workshop at the
Academy.

5th Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony was carried out between 11th May
and 11th June in 2015. The theme of Stone Sculpture Colony for the year 2015 was
“Describing Denizli city and creating eligible sculptures to be used in Denizli town squares by
using functional, artistic motifs, architectural form”. In the 5th Colony, 157 artists applied
with 228 projects from 43 different countries; and they were evaluated by the members of the
jury. After that 10 artists selected.

6th Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony was held between 2nd May and
2nd June in 2016. 143 artists -110 male and 33 female applied from 43 different countries with
192 projects. After detailed assessments made by the jury; 6 male and 2 female artists from 7
different countries were selected for the colony.

Photos and pictures reflecting the activities of sculptures and projects during the Colony and
Academy have been exhibited in Denizli city center and in several places at the end of year.

Each year, 3 cultural excursions were organized throughout the Sculpture Colonies and
Academy Courses period. Promotional activities of tourism centers and regional archeological
and ancient residential areas exhibiting history of art were carried out during these excursions.

Catalogues of Colony and Academy Courses are published in 2 languages (Turkish-English)


for each year which include articles of experts of their fields. These catalogues were firstly
sent to universities and sculptors, then to the people who are dealing with plastic arts.

Video captures have been done during the Sculpture Colony and Academy which also have
been delivered as well as the catalogues. These also included leaflets featuring vision,
knowledge and experience of sculptors.
