Assignment #3 Discrete Structures 2 – Differences and Other Types of Permutations and Combinations

Solve the following. Show your solution.

1. In how many ways can you color a poster if there are 5 different colors available?

• 𝐶 = 2𝑛 − 1 = 25 − 1 = 31 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
2. There are 3 copies each of 4 different books. In how many ways different way can they be
arranged on a shelf?

• Because there are 3 copies of each 4 different book there will be 12 books in total.
12 books, 3 book 1, 3 book 2, 3 book 3, and 3 book 4.
12!
= 369 600 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠
3! ∙ 3! ∙ 3! ∙ 3!
3. In how many ways can 10 different books be divided among A, B and C so that A gets 5 books, 3
books and C 2 books?

10! 5!
• 𝐶(10, 5) ∙ 𝐶(5, 3) = 5!(10−5)! ∙ 3!(5−3)!
= 252 ∙ 10 = 2 520 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

There are 10 books to be divided into three where A gets 5, B gets 3, and C gets 2. After
you choose 5 books for A there will be a remaining 5 books B to choose from, and after
choosing 3 books C will have no choice at all because there are only 2 books remaining.
Therefore, to get how many ways can the 10 books be divided to A, B, and C, we will get
the product of 10C5, and 5C3.

4. How many different signals each consisting of 6 flags hung in a vertical line can be formed from
4 identical red flags and 2 identical green flags?

6! 6∙5 30
• = = = 15 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠
4!2! 2∙1 2
There are 6 flags, 4 red flags and 2 green flags

5. In how many different ways can the letters of the word ‘CORPORATION’ be arranged so that the
vowels always come together?

7! 5!
• ∙
2! 3!
= 2520 ∙ 20 = 50 400 𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠

Considering all 5 vowels in the word ‘CORPORATION’ cannot be separated, there are 7
ways of arranging them. In each arrangement 5 vowels can be arranged. But because R
is repeated twice we need to 7!/2!. Also, O is repeated twice so we need to 5!/3!. To get
the number of arrangements we need to get the product of 7!/2! And 5!/3!.
