ABSTRACT

This section of the research paper is the summary of the overall content of the research paper.

Improper segregation of plastic bottles has been one of the factors affecting the environment, that is why

the researchers come up with this study. The researchers looked for a different persperctive on how to

follow the "Basurathon" that is implemented in the community. The basurathon is a program to reduce the

garbages in the environment and to discipline the members of the community regarding the improper

waste disposal of their wastes. Basurathon is a program that will be a huge help for the environment for it

to be greener and cleaner. To be able to have accurate informations, the researchers gathered different

sources and used different research methods. The researchers used survey questionnaires to identify the

different effects of the research paper they made, to the students. Moreover, the survey questionnaires

contains the effects of transforming plastic bottles as decorative pots and how it will help them in the

future. Thus, the researchers come up with the research title, " recycled decorative pots: effects on

SBCA's bottle waste management", to conserve and recycle plastic bottles as decorative pots in order to

have proper waste management in the community

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the background of the

study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study, and scope and delimitation of the study.

Background

The plastic play such a big role in this global situation. It is commonly used to described a wide

range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that are used in a huge and growing range of the

community. The plastic bottles is a bottled that also constructed with a high-density plastic. Plastic

Bottles are usually used to store liquids of different products. Because of it, it is easier for the people to

carry and use it with no hesitation.

One of the most problem of the people is how to manage the bottles. Recycling is one of the

solutions in this kind of problem, and it has been an important aspect of life for the past thirty years. As

the year go past, the amount of plastic are also rapidly growing. But it has been proven that recycling our

waste products has improved our world to be cleaner and more sanitary.

According to the news about the environmental impacts of plastic water bottles, the water bottle

industry: an industry that thrived on consumerism and exceeded the boundaries of luxury by becoming an

essential item in an average person's life. Despite that 1500 plastic water bottles are being used every

second in the United States alone. These stats make the United States the biggest bottled water market in

the world, strongly profiting the likes of Coke, Pepsi, and Nestle who own and commercialize some of the

largest bottled water companies. However, this multimillion dollar industry does not come without a cost

- a different type of cost that is unfortunately being paid for by the environment.

Recent years the used of bottles have been slow due to the awareness of its negative impact

spreading amongst the general public. But the reduction of plastic bag usage has been holding the

spotlight. However, people cannot just throw away what they have been accustomed in a long years.

Different solutions have been processed but it all depends to the people on how they will adapt these.

Several examples of high plastic bottle usage is impacting the environmental includes:

overflowing landfills, high amount of fossil fuel, and the damage creating in the surface of the ocean with

plastic products. It also includes here who causes these problems. Though, this study still controlling the

production of plastic water bottles which requires up to 17 million barrels oil each year and utilizes the

petroleum product polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The researchers continue to explore how to derive

more value from plastic residuals in a variety of creative approaches, stemming from waste energy to

conversion of plastic to oil.

Besides of following a simple reduce, reuse, recycle, the researchers found out the alternative and

easy way on managing the plastic waste bottle. Since, whole Alitagtag are having a project which the

schools, private and public together with the community, the researchers take it as advantage. A project

entitled “Recycled Decorative Pots: Effects on SBCA’s Bottle Waste Management” is for the students to

build and instead of leaving the bottles behind, it also helps their environment highlights the beauty of its

surrounding.

Statement of the Problem

Plastic Bottles are used to store liquids such as water, soft drinks, cooking oil, inks and etc. But

with rapid growth in population, it becomes difficult to control the huge amount of residual materials

generated from enormous industrial activities. The researchers came up with this study to be able to help

SBCA reduce the bottles and retaining the cleanliness of the school. This research aims to answer the

following questions:

1. What are the student’s perception in using plastic bottles as decorative pots?

2. How does making and using recycled decorative pots affect the student’s in the following?

a. Attitudes towards environment

b. Behavior in segregation

c. Waste management practice

3. What could the SBCA do to motivate students in supporting Basurathon through making recycled

decorative pots?

study will enhance the school’s honour, for they produce students who are responsible and considerate for

the environment.

Scope, Limitation and Delimitation

The main concern of the study is to find a solution to the problems of St. Bridget College

Alitagtag, specifically the bottle waste management which is the most evident. The researchers noticed

that most of the students are buying bottled water instead of using tumbler. This study aims to entertain

and teach students on how they will use the bottles without harming and causing a problem to their

environment and to their health.

Since, the “Basurathon” project is held in Alitagtag the researchers came up with the idea of

making a decorative pot using the used bottled water of students. They can also use other equipment

made from other recyclable materials which can be found inside their rooms or in their house. In this, the

students will learn how to manage and reduce the bottles management waste; and maintain the cleanliness

of the surroundings of the school. It also covers the suggested project that the researchers have proposed

an answer to the problem.

To sum it up, this study will solely focus on the effects of bottle waste management and see the

student’s perception towards this project. This study will only be conducted to the Junior High School

(JHS) students of St. Bridget College Alitagtag Inc. starting from Grade 8 up to Grade 10. It will not

discuss and/or elaborate the other problems in the school – aside from the bottle waste management – nor

discuss a different way to deal with the said problem of the study. The researchers chose to focus on the

said project with a simple way to deal with the most evident problem in the school.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough in-depth search done by

the researchers. This will serve as an aid to fully understand the research to be done and the terms and

concepts for better comprehension of the study.

BENEFITS IN RECYCLING PLASTIC BOTTLES

Recycling bottles imposes great chance of environmental cleanliness. Nowadays, the percentage

of improper waste segregation increases. An equal counterpart of reusing waste materials is repurposing.

According to the studies of Sackett (2016), reusing old objects helps to clean our environment. Pertaining

to the plastic bottles we throw away, it is a great idea to reforge it to something else. This factor is called

"repurposing". It adds a particular sense of satisfaction while doing your part for the environment. In

some manner, it is also recycling. This is the best way to reduce those piles of bottles. Other ways on how

to repurpose plastic bottles is using it as a decoration. Pupils use plastic bottles for making Christmas

decoration. Almost all of the cycles of distributing our trashes are similar only they differ on what is the

product of it. People buying refreshments especially students improperly throw these bottles after usage.

Not only it distracts cleanliness of the surroundings, it affects the discipline of students in terms of

orderliness. With repurposing, people might find solutions to eliminate unwanted plastic bottle waste.

It was found out in the study of Rose (2017) that reusing items also saves money. Rather than

purchase new boxes when moving, reassemble those boxes that have been flattened and stored and pack

up your household goods. Utilize sturdy boxes for storing everything from paperwork to holiday

ornaments. Furthermore, reusing increases complexity of materials. This allows workers or students to

save items, money, and energy finding new objects to use. Another example is the plastic bottle pots.

Buying pots on shops will costs you a lot on planting. So, reusing bottles would save money and also adds

a contributing factor for the cleanliness of our surroundings. People that has enough money buy new

items instead of reusing old ones.

As mentioned by Palafox (2017), the Philippines also promotes the waste diversion requirements

in the form of composting techniques, e.g. vermi-composting. Another form of waste diversion

requirement is recycling of non-biodegradable materials, e.g. plastics, rubber, paper, etc. Finally,

collected solid wastes often end up in a dumpsite. The Philippines restricts the operation of open

dumpsites but allows the operation of controlled dumps. Some wastes also end up in sanitary landfills,

which is the most preferred kind of waste disposal site as it is designed and managed in such a way that

the LGUs have control over important environmental impacts arising from the development and operation

of the facility. Vermi-composting is the product of the decomposition process using various species of

worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms, to create a mixture of decomposing

vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. Vermicast is the end-product of the

breakdown of organic matter by earthworms. Other than the common recycling method, researchers and

other environmentalist found a way to abolish waste for good. Using compost and dumpsites also saves

space. Rather dumping waste in different places, dumpsites collects, segregates, and piles those rubbish

materials.

People in urban sectors experience difficulties in segregating due to lack of space, incompetent

surroundings, and even poor facilities. Although some people consider waste free surroundings as

primary concerns, they practice minimal disposal techniques. Based on the study by Bennagen,

Nepumuceno, and Covar (2012), Among households that did not practice waste segregation, 53% cited

lack of time or a troublesome chore while 36% indicated that it was of no use since garbage collectors

dumped all the wastes into the same truck. People especially in the middle-class find this reason to be

sensible because they consider segregation as unimportant. Composting would also be impossible to those

who are at the urban places because of the absence of a yard or a garden. Another problem was the lack of

time. Forty-four percent of non-segregating households were unsure of composting methods. Unlike in

rural places, they manage to compost easily resulting to higher percentage of cleanliness.

Maintaining the cleanliness of the environment is a crucial act that must be done by humans.

With several techniques that the community do, lessening the filth will be undeniably important. From the

3R’s (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) to composting, communities gradually increase their own knowledge on

abolishing improper plastic bottle waste.

RECYCLING PLASTIC IN MAJOR SECTORS

The plastics industry envisions itself to be a proactively adaptive downstream industry that is able

to fully supply the growing and changing demands of the domestic and export market, create employment

opportunities with a positive well-informed on the environmental image and perception. As defined by

the website Industry.gov, Plastic is a widespread and pervasive material that is used by a multitude of

industries in the production of numerous products. In the Philippines, industries such as the electronics,

construction, food, cosmetics, packaging, and automotive are aligned with the viability of the plastics

industry.  As the industrial sector is continuously emerging, the ability of reusing waste is counteracting

within its breach. As observed by the study of Science World (2008), plastic waste arising from

packaging, buildings, transport vehicles, farming and industrial processes are valuable resources. It tells

that the production of every ton of paper bags consumes four (4) times more than the production of

plastics bags. The goal of producing products requires packaging. Plastics are commonly used by

factories in order to lessen natural resources use. The government implement certain laws which abide the

usage of plastics.

As mentioned in the research of EX corporation (2010), In the Philippines, there are several law

and regulations relevant to recycling: the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA9003),

Executive Order 301, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order No.

1994-28, No. 1997-28, No. 2004-27, and No. 2004-66. RA9003 provides a framework to promote

recycling under the comprehensive program of solid waste management. Executive Order 301 requires all

departments, bureaus, offices and agencies of the executive branch of the government. The DENR

Administrative Orders regulate importation of recyclable materials containing hazardous substances.

These regulations maintain the vulnerability of the environment by promoting frameworks which makes

environmentally friendly decisions of producers at the industrial sectors.

On the agricultural sector, they make use their own plastic waste in order to reuse it again several

times. According to Felongco (2018), the impression of plastics as the environmental antagonist are now

shifting with the environmental advantages of using recycled plastic materials in protecting vegetable

plantation. Plastic wastes coming from factories are manufactured and restored to be used again. It is a

effective way to discipline fellow people in proper manner of plastic management. He also added that

recycled plastics could be used for long term uses which suites the growing plants in the agricultural

sector. This process of recycling plastic especially in the agricultural sectors

Major sectors like the industrial production make use of plastic as a medium of packaging and

advertising. About every 10 products made, 9 uses plastic as a way of protection and preservation.

Factories that produces degradable products tends to use plastic. Manufactures like food, fresh vegetables

and biodegradable products that spoils uses plastic. The implementation of laws which counteracts the

misuse of plastic aids people to properly segregate waste. In summary, all the components regarding on

reusing or recycling needs manpower and severe comprehension. All sectors dealing with plastic waste

continues to work on efficient strategies to eliminate improper plastic waste.

PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT IN OTHER COUNTRY

Waste plastics contaminate food, water and air. Many are calling for a global ban on single-use

plastics because throwing them “away” often means into river systems and then into the world’s oceans.

Different countries have their ways on exterminating plastic waste differently and productively. For

example, is United Kingdom’s (UK) new £1.4 million flagship projects competition launched at the

inaugural annual meeting for members of The UK Plastics Pact. It is hoped it will engage Britain's best

scientists and innovators to help move the country towards more circular economic and sustainable

approaches to plastics. According to Grover (2018), it is a starting journey to totally transforming the

plastic system in the UK and tackling the urgent problem of plastic pollution. This starts with innovation

and crucial help from partners and the people of the environment.

India’s Plastic pollution was rampant. Even as the Indian government’s pro-growth policy calls

for the increased use of plastics – plastics are, in effect, a proxy for economic growth – the country’s

plastics recycling industry is booming, spread across an informal amalgam of street pickers, small start-

ups and non-governmental entities focused on the secondary use economy. According to the study of

Agrawa (2019), To solve the problem of indestructible waste plastic by recycling this hazardous polymer

into useful product so that it can get rid of the malicious material and obtain sustainable balance between

the generation and destruction of waste plastic materials, which is able to provide safe environment for

humans along with various species of the Earth by making a more economical, user friendly and easy to

transport plastic recycling machine. They make use of a technological 3d printing machine using plastic

as the main material.

This chapter includes the research design, the sample, the instruments, the intervention, the data

collection procedure, and the plan for data analysis.

Research Design

This research uses quantitative research design aimed to discover how many people think, act or

feel in a specific way. Quantitative involves large sample sizes, concentrating in the quantity of responses

to gain more focused insight. The quantitative research aims to determine the relationship between an

independent variable and an dependent variable in a population. This study aims to condition the whole

research paper. The research design establishes statistically significant conclusion about a population by

studying a representative sample of the population. This research uses descriptive quantitative research

design which only establishes associations between variables. This research paper is a descriptive

quantitative research design that uses survey questionnaires.

Subject of the Study

The research study will be conducted to the Junior Highschool Students (JHS) of St. Bridget

College Alitagtag, the only private school located at Dominador East, Alitagtag. The chosen

representatives will be demonstrated regarding to the inlined project "BASURATHON 2020". This

project was implemented by the Municipality of Alitagtag which focuses on segregating, recycling, and

reusing plastic waste into a new form of product. The goal of the project is to propagate cleanliness

through school regulations and projects. The study is inlined with the "BASURATHON 2020" and

formulated a group of respondents. 30 students, 10 each from Grades 8, 9, and 10.

Research Instrument

The research utilized a questionnaire consisting of two parts. Part I of the research instrument

consists of the items which gathers respondent’s profile such as their name, grade, and section. Part II of

the research instrument consists of the answer sheet that have numbers 1-30, the respondents will put a

check in the corresponding boxes. The statement in the scale were answered using a semantic differential

scale, which ranged from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The research questions had three subscales,

which measured the satisfactory of the respondents, the impact of the research, and the effectivity of the

research study to the environment and to the campus.

The researchers also used the help of the internet, unpublished research papers, thesis and

dissertations, brainstorming, and personal experience to gather different information from different

sources. These instruments help the researchers to collect and compare different ideas to come up with the

good solutions.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathered in this study was obtained by using survey questionnaires, the internet, and

personal experiences. The survey that the researchers used was quantitative as it assesses the satisfactory,

effects, and the impact of the study. Thus, survey questionnaire is the most effective and recommended

type of data gathering procedure used for most of the studies.

Data Analysis

This data analysis is the process of systematically applying statistical and/or logical techniques to

the data, the respondents agreed that the use of plastic bottles helps the environment and themselves. The

highest mean presented by the data is 4.7. This mean was taken from the perception of the students that

decorating plastic bottles promotes arts and designs and it eliminates plastic waste. The lowest mean

depicted by the table is 4.2 which states that the decorating plastic bottles becomes hobby of students. The

composite mean of the data gathered is 4.6.

Perception is influenced by internal and external factors. One of the central assumptions of the

constructivist approach to perception is that perception is not determined entirely by external stimuli. As a

consequence, it is assumed that emotional and motivational states, together with expectation and culture,

may influence people’s perceptual hypotheses and thus their visual perception.

In a matter of fact that the word "perceptions" is frequently used in daily life and in literature, it

may be assumed that everyone knows what it is and unnecessary to define it. However, perception is

complex and its meaning depends on context. Peterson and Yaakobi (1979) defined "perceptions of

behaviour" as "how a person sees him/herself, the behaviour of others, or a fictitious ideal" (p. 433).

Barman (1999) used "views" and "perceptions" interchangeably. Yager and Yager (1985), in their article

“Changes in Perceptions of Science for Third, Seventh, and Eleventh Grade Students”, Yager and Yager

appeared to interchangeably use the term perception, view, observation, feeling, or believe.

According to Quick and Nelson (1997), the three major characteristics that influence our

perception of other people or object are: the perceiver, the perceived object and the situation. The

Perceiver when an individual looks at the target and attempts to interpret what he/she sees. The Perceived

object, characteristics of the target, which has been, observed also affects the individual’s perception. The

physical attributes, appearance and behavior of other persons in the situation also influences the

perception. The Situation, the physical, social and organizational settings of the situation also influence

individual’s perception. The situation in which we see objects or events is important.

Within the academic discipline of social psychology, it is commonly accepted that attitudes and

behavior are related. It seems intuitive that attitudes influence behavior, but the opposite is also true.

Behavior can influence attitude. For example, a behavior such as participating in a river cleanup as part of

a class requirement might change a person’s previous 12 attitude toward an environmental problem.

People may adjust their attitudes so that they are congruent with their behaviors or a person’s attitude

toward an object or concept may govern the related behavior (Smith & Mackie, 2003, p. 291).

states the students learn how to segregate plastic trash properly. The composite mean has a total of 4.5.

According to LaPiere (1934, p. 230), “By definition a social attitude is a behavior pattern,

anticipatory set or tendency, predisposition to specific adjustment to designated social situations, or, more

simply, a conditioned response to social stimuli.” Behavior towards plastic bags may change if policies

help reduce the significant social stimulus that plastic bags currently provide in stores in the US. Too

many factors beyond personal control might also cause a conflict between attitude and behavior (Smith &

Proper collection is a solution to the country’s waste problem. Unfortunately, disposal would not

be the most and sole answer to this concern (Guzman et al., 2010). Until recently, the disposal of

municipal solid waste does not attract much public attention. From prehistory through the present day, the

favored means of disposal was simply to dump solid waste outside the city and village limits (Enger &

Smith, 2006).

According to the Aeckerman (1997), waste management is an integrated part of the sustainable

development. As population continues to grow and economy expands, there is a need to ensure the waste

generated is properly manage on order to preserve the existing environment for future generations. Waste

As part of the sustainable development goals the only objective that generally includes the

address of children as part of the solution towards effective waste management is the section where it is

stated that people need to be made aware of the impact of waste on their heath, well-being and the

environment.

Children or young adults are often instrumental in bringing about change in society. Research

through the years has shown that among children and their parents, the children can be effective

advocates in changing their parents’ lifestyles and this process create a positive or negative influence with

regards to environmental matters (Kiev Declaration, 2003; Ballantyne et al , 2006; Lui and Kaplan; 2006;

Rickenson and Lundholm; 2008). In the real world, however, children are often not included in the

critical decisions that are made in their communities where they live.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations of the study.

Conclusions

Based from the findings, the following conclusions were drawn.

1. This section of the study establishes the claim plastic bottles recycled to decorative pots is

effective and meaningful on diminishing plastic waste on the classroom.

2. Based on the study conducted by the researchers, making decorative pots benefits the

environment in the campus especially the classrooms.

3. The paper has tried to manifest the ways on how plastic pots diminishes the risk of uncleanliness

in our surroundings.

4. The study also teaches us the value of responsibility regarding to our environment. This will play

a major role in order for students, faculty staffs, and also the maintenance to comprehend what

small decisions could make our place much better.

5. This research is relevant for the people to broaden their minds on how they act towards the

environment. Responsibility must be in the hands of all people. We all must be guarding our

environment as our home.

Recommendation

This section of the study provides future recommendations for the following:

1. FUTURE RESEARCHERS

The future researchers may conduct new an improved technique on decreasing

plastic bottle waste in their own environment. Since there are numerous ways on making

decorations by the use of plastics, they can make other alterations on the decorative

plastic bottle pots. They may also conduct extra research regarding to the benefits on

making decorative pots.

2. STUDENTS

This study helps students to comprehend the importance of cleanliness. The students

who uses bottles foe drinking may not throw it in a garbage can but may recycle it. Also,

it also boost their creativity especially on the field of arts and crafts.

3. “GREEN THUMB" GARDENERS

People who has hobbies like planting ang growing plants could make use of the

research's benefits. Rather than buying expensive factory made pots, they can make use

of plastic bottles in all shapes and sizes and recycle it for lesser expenses. They may also

redecorate, upgrade, and design their own pots according to their own free will.

RATIONALE
The bottled water industry has grown rapidly over the past few years. Today, the convenience of

disposable water bottles means that we can find bottled water almost everywhere we go. Plastic means

soft and easy to turn into many different forms. The use of plastics is evitable, plastic plays such a big

role in the society. In line with this, the Municipality of Alitagtag cope with a program called Basurathon.

This program aims to teach people how to properly segregate the wastes and recreate new product. With

this, the study that the researchers proposed is Recycled Decorative Pots: Effects on SBCA’s Bottle

Waste Management, this study is for the students in SBCA. This could help them to enlighten how much

the plastics affect the environment and what way should do to lessen its effect. From the observation of

the researche’rs students are not used to - in using tumbler bottle. In this study, the researchers came up

with the idea of having an alternative way to lessen the bottles in the campus. To lessen, plastic bottles

serves as a alternative pots in the plants.

This study aims to teach the students how the plastic bottles affect the people and the

environment. If this study is continuously used and do, it will help not only the School but also the

Municipality of Alitagtag by helping the bio-men in collecting biodegradable and nonbiodegradable

garbage. It will also help the students to be more responsible to the cleanliness of the environment. Lastly,

it will beneficial to the nature which helps to control the natural disasters due to the man-made disaster.
