Edge Detection:
• Edge detection is “local” image processing methods designed to detect edge
pixels.
• Concept that is based on a measure of intensity-level discontinuity at a point.
• It is possible to link edge points into edge segments, and sometimes these
segments are linked in such a way that they correspond to boundaries, but this is
not always the case.
The image gradient and its properties:
• The tool of choice for finding edge strength
and direction at loca- tion (x,y) of an
image, f, is the gradi- ent, denoted by ▼ƒ, a
and defined as the vector
The Laplacian
• The laplacian of a 2-D function f(x,y) is a second order derivatives defined as
▼2ƒ=∂2ƒ/∂2x+∂2ƒ/∂2y
• The first laplacian is combined with smoothing as a
precursor to finding edges via
zero crossings. Consider the function.
