Presenter : Muh. Danendra Isnaen
Study Program: English Education
University : Brawijaya University
Summary :
Introduction
Many research has been conducted to define criteria for effective learning and
the characteristics of good teacher. But we all know that there is no ideal model
of teacher that have preferred behavior and qualifications due to their
characteristics. The prior research regarding effective teaching given result that
every teaching-learning phase is unique on their own from one another. This
research is conducted to find which preferable characteristic of ELT by involving
teachers and students. The researcher hoping that this research may helps the
teacher upgrading program to resulting benefit for both teachers and students.

Critical Review
Good and qualified teachers are essential for efficient functioning of educational
systems and for enhancing the quality of learning. Research supports this notion
that a good teacher and actions to be taken on their part in the classroom play a
vital role in provoking effective and efficient learning on the part of the students.
Teachers also have a fundamental role in their learners’ academic achievement
and their quality can highly influence student outcomes.
Although effective teachers in general may share some characteristics, there are
certain qualities that differ among them depending on the subject matter they
teach. It is the nature of the subject matter that makes language teachers
different from teachers of other fields. The way they build their belief, the
different assumption and perspective they had, in example to organize
instruction.

Theoretical Framework
The key to effective teaching lies in the growth and improvement of classroom
communication-the ability of the teacher to adequately communicate to the
student and the student's ability and opportunity to respond and demonstrate
some competence in reproducing what he has learned by formulating in his own
words the facts and concepts that now illuminate his mind.
And I personally, also believe that it is important to see things work from
perceptions of learners thus the relevance of their expectations of the course will
be in the same line with their commitment by the availability of the good
communication in the classroom.

Methods
The research subject was divided into two group: 1) 200 ELT Teachers and 2)
406 9th grade high school students from 10 different school around metropolitan
area in Tel Aviv.
The data is collected with questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires
consist set of 20 ELT characteristics to be desirably chosen by the subject. The
subject wished to choose 3 major characteristic they prefer and rank them in the
list regarding the importance.
Then the interview is conducted to get advance understanding in the
quantitative result. The length of it was 10-15 minutes. The subjects are 16
teachers and 18 students. They were asked t give opinion what kind of
characteristic is being the most useful as the successor of the language learning
and why some characteristics are more important than others.
Result
To rank the ELT characteristic in this statistical procedure, each characteristic is
graded. Non-selected characteristic will be graded 0 as it is the lowest grades,
and the first-choice characteristic graded 3 as the highest grades.
The first result is both teachers and students assume that their mastery in
specific subject is really a matter, in the context of ELT such as 4 basic skills.
Then, both teachers and students assume that how teacher deliver the
information in the class plays important role since it will be the determination of
students’ understanding. They seem prefer understandable and easy-to-
memorize method done by the teachers.
Lastly, teachers and students have different assumption here. Students tend to
like teacher who treats them better, fair, and equal and the availability of the
teacher after class. Well, on the other hand, teachers assume the good ELT
characteristic is providing students with tons of experience to support their
success.

Discussion
Teachers might be expected to know what to teach since they must possess the
subject matter mastery, but maintaining it must be difficult. Eventually, students
only aware to their teachers’ poor knowledge if the subject matter exceed their
levels. Teachers’ proficiency towards language being taught is helpful in
conducting lesson without fear and insecurity. This will also ensure the material
development will be energized to stimulate and motivate students.

Opinion :
The study shows that both teachers and students have their own expectation
towards the major suitable characteristics for ELT. In this case, preferable
characteristic determined by how the teachers’ seen n the student’s perspective
and what the teachers is really trying to provide to the students. Some of the
students may tend to be comfortable with such a lovely and kind teacher and put
so much hate with the filled with furious one. This can be signal that teacher also
should maintain their own characteristic if they wanted to be helpful for
students since almost all of the students would choose teachers with positive
side rather than one with the bad side.
