An ADDIE plan to train 10 motel supervisors to conduct ongoing training on HOW TO

CLEAN A MOTEL ROOM for new employees who are working from the ground up in the

hospitality industry. These new housekeeping employees have never cleaned motel rooms

before.

PHASE 1: ANALYSIS

a. Instructional Goals:

 Fully equipped motel Supervisors with the essential skills to be effective and efficient

leaders of the hotel cleaners.

 Well-learned and well-versed motel Supervisors in the field of hospitality management

which makes them effective teachers to their subordinates.

 Have motel Supervisors who can create and encourage a healthy work environment not

only for themselves but for their subordinates, in this case, the newly hired hotel cleaners

that they will train.

 Motel Supervisors who are adequately and sufficiently learned in the following:

i. Relevant standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration

(OSHA) (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of

Labor, n.d.).

ii. Importance of maintaining high standards of sanitation and cleanliness of the Motel

especially considering that it will ultimately fuel the continuous patronage of the

guests, as well as potential guests in the future.

iii. Creating reasonable rewards and penalty system for compliance and violation of the

imposed hygiene and cleanliness standards by the motel.

3

 Motel Supervisors who can create systematic approach on their own whereby they could

monitor whether the motel cleaners comply with motel’s sanitation and cleanliness

standards. This systematic approach is also vital in the sense that it would save them the

energy, time, money, and even increase the satisfaction of the guests (Standards of

cleaning for Hotel Housekeeping Department, n.d.)

b. Instructional Analysis:

 The following topics would be the main focus of this instructional plans for the motel

Supervisors in order to prepare them to effectively train the newly hired motel cleaners:

i. The concept and characteristics of an effective leader;

(Essence of Leadership; Characteristics of an effective leader; How to be an

effective leader; and Leadership styles)

ii. Basic concepts in hospitality management with emphasis on accommodation and

lodging facility:

iii. Motel’s hygiene and cleanliness standards;

iv. Relevant OSHA provisions;

v. Effective Human Resource Management (Human capital Management as a Concept;

Overview of the Trends in HRM; and Understanding Key Performance Indicators)

 Each topic shall be finished by the learners in a span of six (6) days or a total of thirty

(30) days, excluding Sundays. The first two (2) shall be dedicated for the lecture by an

expert of the scheduled topic for the week. The first half of the third day shall be

dedicated to for the conduct of the written examination of the scheduled topic. The

second half of the third day will start the conduct of the oral exams for the learners until

the fourth day. The fifth and sixth day will be dedicated for Discussion in case of the
4

topics on hospitality management, Motel’s hygiene and cleanliness standards, and

Relevant OSHA provisions. While the fifth and sixth day will be divided to accommodate

the Discussion and Case Study portion for topics on effective leadership and effective

human resource management.

c. Learner Analysis:

 The learners in this case are motel Supervisors. As such, their educational and training

backgrounds, previous work experience and history, as well as personality must be

examined. Discovering the learners’ favorite aspect in performing their jobs as

Supervisor also matters.

 The foregoing matters could be properly found out through a) examination of their

resumes; b) conduct of one-on-one interview; c) conduct of panel interview; d) checking

with their previous employers, teachers, former classmates, or trainers; e) interview of

their present and past colleagues; f) checking-in with their submitted character

references;

d. Learning Objectives: At the end of the training period, I would want the learners, in this

case, to:

 Confidently lead, interact, train, and manage their subordinates and easily assist

their subordinates, in this case, the motel cleaners, when it comes to responding to the

latter’s inquiries regarding concepts of hospitality management, OSHA provisions,

motel’s hygiene and cleanliness standards;

 Possess the ability to devise ways and means to ensure the compliance by their

subordinates of the motel’s cleanliness standards;

5

 Have the independence and creativity to create a systematic and effective

approach or methods to ensure compliance by their subordinates;

 Have the ability to make objective evaluation of the work performance of their

subordinates and impose the appropriate rewards or penalty for a job well-done or a

violation;

 Have the ability to encourage camaraderie between him, his subordinates, and

colleagues and to be charismatic enough in such a way that he would encourage open

participation and inputs from his colleagues and subordinates.

PHASE 2: DESIGN

a. Design assessments

 The learners involved in this case are already motel Supervisors. As such it could be

properly inferred that they already have extensive education and training when it comes to

topics such the concept and characteristics of an effective leader; basic concepts in

hospitality management; the motel’s hygiene and cleanliness standards; relevant OSHA

provisions; and effective Human Resource Management. Evidently, there is no more need

for an extensive review of the topics to be covered, as such, the conduct of a Lecture by an

expert in the topic will suffice for the learners to review and re-orient them of the

important matters to effectively train the newly hired motel cleaners.

 Here, the training will be formatted in such a manner as to re-orient and re-examine

material topics which will very helpful for the learners to effectively train the newly hired

motel cleaners. Thereafter, instructional strategies to be adapted will those that are aimed

at determining the degree of understanding of the learners in each of the topics.

b. Choose a course format

6

 Considering experience, education, and work history of the motel supervisors, the most

effective course format to be followed to train them is by 1) Initiating a Lecture by an

expert in the schedule topic; 2) It would then be followed by a written and oral

examination; 3) Discussion of fellow learners; 4) Case study.

c. Create an instructional strategy

 Before the motel Supervisors could effectively train the newly hired and inexperienced

motel cleaners, they must first familiarize, teach, and re-orient themselves of the concept

and characteristics of an effective leader; basic concepts in hospitality management;

motel’s hygiene and cleanliness standards; relevant OSHA provisions; and ffective

Human Resource Management.

 After Lecture on each topic (with reading materials provided), the motel Supervisors will

be required to undergo an individual oral and written examination for each topic. This is

intended to test the knowledge of the motel Supervisors after studying the topic scheduled.

Then, to truly ensure their understanding of which topic, they will be asked to summarize

and discuss each topic to their colleagues.

 As regards the topic of being and effective leader and effective human resource

management, the motel Supervisor shall likewise be required apply relevant concepts by

responding to situational cases to be given by the invited expert in the field.

 Lastly, the motel Supervisors will be assessed by the invited expert in the field as follows:

i. As for the topic of Basic concepts in hospitality management, Motel’s hygiene and

cleanliness standards, and Relevant OSHA provisions, the learner will be graded as
7

follows: a) Written examination = 30%; b) Oral examinations = 30%; c) Discussion to

fellow learners = 40%

ii. As for the topics of effective leadership and effective human resource management, the

learner will be graded as follows: a) Written examination = 20%; b) Oral examinations

= 20%; c) Discussion to fellow learners = 30%; d) Case Study = 30%
